When it's quiet like this
birds have bothers,
restlessly scanning autumn trees
nervous and knowing
beady and twitchy
exposed to the slightest breeze

Elegance gone
just rats with wings
but startled they launch into beautiful things
in sketches and studies
in paintings and poems
on bric-a-brac for peasants
or vases for kings
when vermin take flight they're beautiful things

Shuffle on branches so equally bare
a synchronised process
- a gift to the air
released from their scaffolds
in imaginary slings
when vermin take flight
