Emanuel started life when Tim Burgess sent a copy of a new Charlatans' song, Emilie, over to Laura Cantrell. Tim felt the song was a message reaching out to someone, and he asked Laura if she would consider writing a reply, a message back. Laura recruited Son Volt's Mark Spencer on pedal steel and Mary Lee Kortes to and they recorded Emanuel. The other half of the story started by The Charlatans. Sean O Hagan's lush strings complete the widescreen gothic romance
