First study made after researching and analysing Hans Zimmer's soundtrack for 'Interstellar'. This study was inspired by themes such as 'Chasing Drone' and the idea of a consistent melodic theme that re-occurs throughout the film to represent love or a connection to family. This was written so that melodic material could be adapted for tension/action scenes - something that Zimmer has done a lot of in this soundtrack.

'Interstellar' Study 1 (Love theme)

A second study made from analysing the 'Interstellar' soundtrack.  Using melodic material from my first study and techniques inspired by Zimmer's work, a piece was created for use in a scene such as 'Wormhole' or 'Detach'.  

'Interstellar' Study 2 (Action theme)

A third and longer study made from studying 'Interstellar' - using techniques such as time-stretching, 'col legno' string parts, infinite delay, controlled distortion and pitch-shifting. Inspired by pieces 'Mountains', 'Detach' and 'Imperfect Contact'.

Interstellar Study 3 (Wonder, Action, Suspense)

For my final year dissertation at the University of the West of England I researched an analysed the history and techniques used by a variety of film composers to create or suggest tension. Two historically relevant scores were studied  - Bernard Herrmann's 'Psycho' and Stanley Kubrick's well-sourced 20th century modernist music from Bartók, Ligeti and Penderecki. Finally an in-depth look was taken into Hans Zimmer's 2014 score for Interstellar and a number of compositional studies were made in response to ideas raised in the thesis.
