First day of high school. Guy sitting in front of me turns around and says "Hey, you want to be in a band?"  Thus the epic saga of Anacrusis started.  That guy was Jon Van Wie, who became the most amazing guitarist I have ever known. 

A couple years later Jack Lovinger took me to see Tony Williams Lifetime at the Village Vanguard.  They had some guitar player who was mind blowing (probably Allen Holdsworth).  Shortly before I had accidentally seen Mahavishnu Orchestra (we meant to see Johnny Winter).  The combination inspired me to write this piece of music and insist that the band learn a long, torturously complex tune.  From then on we proceeded to write a body of amazing prog rock, some of which turned out to be proto-speed metal.  I think people had a hard time reconciling our age (15-17 years old) with the complexity of the music.  I think all this went down around 1972 or 73.

In 1984 I wrote a three-minute song—a mini variation set, really—called Northeast Reservation Lines, on a poem by Jane Shore, based on an airline’s recorded “on hold” message: “Northeast Reservation Lines are busy. As soon as an agent becomes available, we will connect you. Thank you for waiting. This message will be repeated.” As in the old “telephone” game, the original message becomes hopelessly garbled over the course of a series of attempted repetitions, a state reflected in the metamorphoses of the musical setting. After hearing Northeast Reservation Lines, Jane suggested Fortunes Pantoum (her “only other Found Poem,” as she describes it) as a possible candidate for a choral setting. Many years later, I finally have gotten around to it. The poem consists entirely of fortunes from actual fortune cookies.
