The Chainsmokers single with Bebe Rexha is written from the perspective of someone in a dying relationship.  (in my cover version, this is the perspective of the man).  In the song, he confronts his lover and attempts to remind her that she once loved him, (and may still love him), before they drift apart for good.

Although they have been distant recently, he is invested in their relationship and is driven by the memories of the way things used to be between them:  passionate and naive...  He doesn't want to live without her and is asking her if she is still as invested in their relationship as he is.  

The first verse begins by looking back to when they had a strong relationship.  He reminds her that while things might be "looking down" for them and they've grown apart to the point that they're like "strangers now", they were once "two kids with their hearts on fire".  They once "thought that they couldn't get higher" and he believes that they can go back to that place as he asks her to not "let it burn us out"

In the pre-chorus, he confronts her and forces her to face the declining state of their relationship before giving her an opportunity to work things out with him to change it.  He tells her that she should get her priorities clear and to "think about what (she) believe(s) in now".  Sure that he doesn't "want to live without (her)", he asks if she cares as much for him as he does for her.  Attempting to help her remember her love for him, he reminds her of the time when he was the one who was unsure of their relationship, but she "wouldn't let (him) walk out on (her)".

In the Chorus, he reminds her that when they first met in "that bar downtown" he wasn't sure about her, but she won him over.  She flirted with him and asked what he was "doing for the rest of (his) life".  His response illustrates his spontaneous streak, and that it's perhaps a big deal that he wants a long-term relationship with her, as he quips that he "doesn't even know what (he's) doing tonight", let alone his life.  That meeting blossomed into a passionate relationship.  She had said the he "would never regret" call her his.  By bringing this up, he's indirectly suggesting that he may actually be starting to regret it.  With the line "I call you mine", he reminds her that even after all of this, he still calls her his.

They may not have had much in the material sense, but he misses being a broke kid "running through the city" with her.  He felt "set free" from his pain "every time (she) kissed (him)."  In bitter-sweet remembrance, he realizes the naivety of their time together as they both thought they'd "never look away" from each other's eyes.  He never would have imagined that they could have become strangers.  Fiercely, he commands both her and himself to not "let the memory fade".
