Bside Incoming: Athlete Whippet

This time we invite an exciting Berlin based duo behind the Bside turntables to walk us through some of their most treasured records. With two releases on Toy Tonics, a record under past guests Rhythm Section, as well as showcasing music from artists such as Ross From Friends, Baltra and Seb Wildblood on their own Squareglass imprint, we are certainly excited to bring you an episode from such impeccable selectors: Athlete Whippet.

The duo met at London’s Goldsmiths, with a passion for music bringing them together. One now works at !K7, the other developing live sets for the likes of Priya Ragu, Berwyn, and Lapsley; their spare time is spent crafting incredible music with a live bass, guitar, piano, and some hardware synths and samples.

Their Bside selections pay tribute to their influences and musical connections; records on Tartelet, Rhythm Section and Toy Tonics, incredible artists like Max Graef, Paula Tape, Jitwam, and COEO all making the cut. Expect a reflection of their own artistic output which always straddles the line between dancefloor fun and soothing sounds.

~ Mézigue [France] ~

Mézigue (meaning ‘me’ in Parisian slang) is one of the rarest bird and freest spirit when it comes to the French electronic music scene. Off-the-wall leading figure of the house made in Paris, he is particularly known for breaking genre codes with ridiculous energy. Co-founder of the D.KO Records team in 2013, he acts in favor of a powerful and festive house revival alongside equally talented buddies like LB aka LABAT, Mad Rey or Paul Cut. They started as a DJ crew organizing the Keep D.KO Alive parties in local bars before quickly gaining recognition and becoming one of the top house labels in France. As a producer, he owes his early success to his banger track ‘Du Son Pour Les Gars Sûrs’ in 2016 - utterly distinctive of his personal touch: a bass-driven house with subtile deep, lo-fi and acid notes. No wonder that he got his well-deserved Boiler Room in 2019. He has been unstoppable lately and earned a residency called “Mezmère Résidence” at the iconic Rex Club where he invited top talents such as Funkineven, DMX Krew or AliA. If you are luck enough to see him play, expect a crazy oscillation of house, disco, hip-hop and drum & bass.

In this 3-year anniversary mix, he’s going back to the basics distilling a gut-wrenching deep house with pleasant acid touches from Willow or Birds of Canada. The summer season has never been so properly opened guys!

Crown Ruler Mix #25 - Ben Fester B2B Cousin.

We’ve got another mix for you snatched from the wild - this time from iconic brothers @ben-fester and @secondcousins. Recorded at our open-air party co-presented with @planettrip earlier this year, the siblings warmed up for maestro @floatingpoints in the breeze of twilight, where they proved themselves as well-seasoned DJ’s no longer necessitating introduction. 

Sink into this mix of trippy downtempo, percussive electro and cherished vocal house from two masters of their craft.

This mix was recorded on the stolen lands of the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation. We acknowledge their Elders past and present, and recognise efforts in the ongoing resistance against colonialism. Always Was, Always Will Be.
