Your Periphery Is My Center is a show curated by Oramics to support regionally underrepresented artists by amplifying the voices from the Eastern European electronic music scene and examining inequality within the industry. Each show presents a selection of music from a different country in the region of Central and Eastern Europe.

The first episode of 2024 is prepared by two artists from Kosovo, @ma_ta_le and @t-a-d-i representing @bijatcollective, and is dedicated to contemporary music from Kosovo.

The show premiered on Refuge Worldwide in Berlin on the 5 February 2024.

Things are gearing up at Lowup Records. We’re more than thrilled to present a joint release of Max Le Daron’s Monin’Guetin together with Akwaaba. Max has been working intensely this last couple of years on a series of Afro inspired tunes, collaborating with various vocalists. Monin’Guetin is a serious Afro banger featuring Joey Le Soldat, Burkina rapper on the rise & Gan Gah. 
The original will be out in a few on Akwaaba music alongside other gems. We at Lowup, will present the accompanying remix EP featuring remixes by Gafacci, KKingKong, Siete Catorce & Lorenzo BITW.

First up is Ghanaian producer Gafacci (the guy behind Jowaa) with a darker, threatening groove, also adding some percussive elements resulting in a fusion of Club aesthetics with a genuine afro feel. A Juju ceremony for the dancefloor. Next is portuguese producer on the rise Kking Kong (Enchufada). This guy is on fire, check his latest 20 or so productions. Here he delivers the goods once again. Warning: certified banger with a bewitching flute sound that will nest itself inside your head for days.
Siete Catorce a producer hailing from mexico deconstructs and reassembles this global club music twisting it into a far out hypnotizing Affair, one for the headz! Lorenzo Bitw has steadily pushed his way into the focus of many over the last two years. This one definitely has a more techno/trancey feel and a great build up resulting in a liberating climax!

KOOLAXO - Just Be Good To Me

This mix seeks to present an Australian only psychedelic folk compilation. Although there have been many compilations and mixes on Australian Psychedelic and Progressive Music, particularly Psychedelic Rock and Progressive Rock, I feel there is a gap on the more folk-leaning psychedelia that was being produced in Australia by singer-songwriters and folk acts. Taking influences from various countries around the world from Great Britain to India to China and experimenting with psychedelic and progressive techniques, these artists injected fresh life into the tired and restrictive forms of traditionalism that dominated the Australian folk music scene at the time. 

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, quintessential psychedelic folk bands like Tully and Extradition expanded their musical horizons by adopting folk sounds and employing instruments from nearby Asian countries such as China and India as well as countries in the Middle East such as Turkey and Lebanon. Imported instruments such as bamboo flute, Lebanese bells, Turkish gongs, sitar, veena, tablas and tambura were inventively combined with typical Western rock and folk instrumentation. Extradition also creatively drew on avant-garde techniques using sounds collected from the natural environment such as water, stones, palm leaves and sticks as sound sources. Both Extradition and Tully created a revolutionary type of folk music that preceded the New Age and World Music explosion of the 1980s. 

Similarly, drawing on Australia's closeness to Asia, Australian-born folksinger Paul Adolphus travelled to Japan in the early 1970s and there recorded a collection of songs in 1973. In collaboration with Japanese folk musician Mitsu Harada, Adolphus mixed Western instruments such as organ, flute, guitar and piano with traditional Japanese instruments such as Koto. Through the incorporation of non-Western music, this psychedelic folk sound better reflected Australia's own multicultural identity and its long historical interaction with countries to the north of Australia, which predates European colonisation.

Other underrepresented musicians such as S.J.C. Powell in 1975 took inspiration from British Progressive Rock and Space Rock producing sci-fi folk-rock epics built around flanged and wah-wah guitars, early analogue synthesizers and progressive studio experimentations with tape phasing. However, due to the fact he was on same label as Australian band AC/DC, his 1975 album did not receive the same promotional support and consequently fell through the cracks of the music industry.

Overall, this mix compiles and shines light on some of best songs from Australia's fertile underground psychedelic folk scene from the late 1960s to 1987 - although much of this was released in the 1970s. Most of these songs have been relentlessly collected over a period of 8 years - many being documented on my Youtube channel. A large portion of the material is very rare in its original form with some albums fetching up to a thousand dollars. Others remain obscure to collectors and can still be found for reasonable prices if found.
