What Happened To You?

Based on one of my poems..... and introducing a bass guitar. Outside the comfort zone, but it's the place to be....

Dunes in June in marron grass
Oil rigs float and tankers pass
A picnic blanket dragged to where we eat 
While red ants feast on Sandalled feet
 
Tide races where lugworm cast
Carving channels slick and fast
The moat is flooded the castle breached
The children's ball carries out of reach 
 
Backs are red; shoulders blistered 
Sun and wind and sand assisted
A strandline zig zags seagulls poke and pry
Seeking a bounty with ever hungry eyes 
 
The tide that flows and ebbs away
Turns to surge another day
Finds the stranger on the shore
And cover tracks they made before

Right Now Is The Moment That We Are Alive

Written In response to *that* gesture. There are many ways to interpret it, none of which are healthy.....
Written in a cafe, originally intended as a spoken word peice, but also put to music the following day

Not Waving Or Drowning

My friends in Igloo Hearts had a songwriting prompt in their blog. Write a song about something someone said to you… a good opportunity for something deep and meaningful, but au contraire….
Well I’ve had lots of things said to me, profound, flippant, deep, welcome, unwelcome, but this one has stuck for nearly half a century.
A school friend was at home pottering about. Unbeknown to him, his zipper was undone on his kecks. He only found out when his dad sidled up to him.
“Stephen,” he whispered
“Yeah?”
“Have you ever seen a dead budgie fall out of its cage?”, he muttered, and wandered off.
It took a good five minutes to twig.
I remember this being recounted, vividly. It has become my favourite euphemism; it’s up there with “What’s up, Sooty? (That’s for another day)
Didn’t think I’d ever get it into a song. Same day of the brief, I wrote this in about ten minutes whilst in bed, as a spoken word piece, by lunchtime the next day it had music.
The only way I can describe it is that it’s the musical equivalent of those dreams where you find yourself naked on public transport…..

Winner of 2024 Liverpool Songwriting Competition with "The Boy With the Red Hat", taken from "Death to Mortality".

People have said that Jim plays guitar like a drummer. He is. In the mid eighties, he toured the Far East, Europe and Tyneside with near-legendary Geordie club band Foxy, before putting down his sticks, opting for a life of obscurity as graphic designer, husband and dad.

In his late thirties with a mid-life-crises looming, he started writing and recording his songs, self-releasing “Some Songs by Jim Pearson” in his fortieth year.

Suddenly, nothing happened, so he continued, and gradually accumulated a niche following of several well-intentioned virtual people, each possessing an uncanny appreciation of music and lyrics, as well as managing to get a handful of plays on BBC 6 music.

Jim is also singer, guitarist, songwriter with niche NW-UK band Scaredycats, who's debut album "Dumb Animals" was pronounced album of the year by Liverpool Sound and Vision in 2017.

Last year, he was a key collaborator and producer with international lockdown supergroup "Nothing On TV".

According to Jim... "You might not agree, but I think I’m getting better at this. I’ve come to terms with the fact that I will never get the global recognition I so clearly deserve, and honestly, I am all the happier for it."

BBC 6 Music's Tom Robinson says... “This is the astonishingly prolific Merseyside songwriter Jim Pearson… you never can be sure what kind of project Jim will come up with next, but you can always be sure it’s gonna be pretty darn good...” (The Tom Robinson Show, January 25th 2020)
