Welcome to Frequency Underground! We feature the best in regional house and techno each and every Thursday. We're excited to get back in the rhythm of releasing weekly mixes and couldn't think of a better way to kick things off than with a mix from our good friend Zen Katana! This set was recorded live at our Soniq Oasis festival  right as the morning sun was beginning to break. Lots of deep, lush, beautiful organic sounds on this one...enjoy!

◾How did you come up with your dj name: It was given to me.

◾How and when did you get into djing: I’ve been loving music since my ears developed and started playing music for people as soon as I was capable. Turned out to be about 2006 in Detroit, MI

◾Who are your musical influences and what is your inspiration: Right now I’m really enjoying Volen Sentir, Guy Gerber, Superflu, Space Motion, Mariner + Domingo, Serious Dancers, and Lunar Plane

◾Describe your sound as a DJ: Currently, when I play solo sets it is primarily organic & progressive house. Also slide into the melodic and tribal genres as well.

◾What does the future hold in store for you as an artist: Collaborating with some of the finest regional talent I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. Good people, Good times, Good music.

The Essential Mix is a weekly radio show on BBC Radio 1 currently broadcast between 0:00 - 2:00 AM UK time on Saturday morning. Originally broadcast on 30 October 1993, the Essential Mix features contemporary DJs and music producers of electronic dance music. The show has been presented since its inception by Pete Tong and features an uninterrupted two-hour mix from a different artist each week, overlaid with occasional continuity announcements delivered by Tong. With a broadcast run in excess of 25 years, the Essential Mix is one of the longest-running programmes in the current BBC Radio 1 schedule, and is one of very few Radio 1 shows which is not broadcast live.

In 1993 I became the resident DJ of what was to become quite possibly the most remembered and the most ‘rockin’ club in Wales – The Hippo Club! I warmed up and finished nights alongside the very best such as Sasha, John Digweed, Nick Warren, Paul Oakenfold, Sven Vath, Sister Bliss, John Kelly, Laurent Garnier and more. I has also made regular appearances at Timeflies in Cardiff, one of the longest running UK club brands.

I then went on to guest DJ at clubs around the World for several years. In 1997 I entered the UK Ministry of Sound mixing championship and came 2nd (yes in the days it was still vinyl) and then in 2000 I was voted 54th in the DJ Magazine Top 100.

In 2000 I launched my own successful weekly club nights – Enter the Dragon @ Vision with Paul Oakenfold and then later ROAR.
