saw a documentary about this movie and the directors basically knew absolutely nothing about the game and just used a screenplay they already had in mind and slapped mario names in it. 

also the scene in that club had actual strippers who kept getting naked during filming

And the guy who played mario had a broken arm for most of the filming

apparently the directors where really really pretentious and didn't care at all about making a mario movie and just wanted a launching point for their own movies
