Get ready for an 80’s dancehall / roots revival with this killer release from Queens, NY’s new Rock Steady dons, The Frightnrs. This four piece ensemble have taken the cooled out vintage vibes of Jamaican Rock Steady, combined it with the raw energy and vocal stylings of 80’s Rub A Dub and added a touch of punk rock spirit to create an entirely unique sound that redefines what a reggae band can sound like. They recently broke through with a soaring cover of Etta James’ “I’d Rather Go Blind” on NY’s esteemable Daptone Records, and have now give us this great 5 track EP for Mad Decent. The Daptone connection should give you an idea of the genuine sound we’re dealing with here- this is the real deal vintage vibes, polished into a beautiful roughness by longtime NY producer Victor “Ticklah” Axelrod. Alex Tea has stepped out from his reggae collectives Kiwi and Sananga to debut his first solo single, “On a Ride.” A sequence of dream-like visions set to a Caribbean rhythm, “On a Ride” evokes a beach just after sunset when the light starts to fade, thoughts turn to memories, and the possibilities of night seem infinite. “She speaks to me across the ocean,” Tea gently croons, “and slumbers in the warm embrace of my place in her bed.” The single’s companion track, “Country Living,” is an idyllic pastoral straight from the heart of the city.

As in his work with Kiwi, Sananga, and Orquestra Raiz, Tea continues to seamlessly blend classic American, Caribbean, and Brazilian styles and influences. Though this is his first solo release, Tea has maintained a collaborative, community-minded production style: both “On a Ride” and “Country Living” feature guest contributions from some of Tea’s favorite singers and instrumentalists in the NYC jazz and soul scene.

Alex Tea ft. Victor Rice - On A Ride Dub

Jim the Boss is a reggae and dub producer, engineer and musician from New Jersey USA.  He owns studio Hoboken HiFi which features The HiFi Rockers studio band and record label Hudson Soul.  He has worked with acts such as Horace Andy, Cornel Campbell, Sly & Robbie, David Hillyard, Victor Rice and many more.  His dub music albums feature a host of artists in compilation form and both full length titles "Hudson Soul" in 2016 and "Dub in HiFi" in 2019 have been nominated for Independent Music Awards.  His music has also been nominated in various Awards and Lists in countries such as France, Germany, New Zealand and Greece.
