Since its inception in 2019, the Porto based Eastern Nurseries label has released a string of noteworthy titles, yet the first two outings by Canadian Rifles, the solo moniker of label founder Rui P. Andrade, remain defining pillars in the labels discography.

These first two releases, Canadian Rifles ‘Eastern Nurseries’ album and the follow up single ‘Of Course I Still Love You / Geranium’ sprawl with acute emotive clangour and venerable opulence, their soundscapes conjuring visions of windswept cities, blemished technology and inherent tenderness. 

Now these works have been carefully reassembled on one expanded reissue, remastered by Daniele Antezza of Dadub mastering and featuring two new remixes by Dino Spiluttini and Burning Pyre.

For Side Down, Tom White offers up two contrasting sides of ear debris culled from a recent performance (the last before our new reality set in) and a collaborative dance work. ‘No script on set’ is a deft re-imagining of a piece originally made for 8-channels. Losing none of its space or atmosphere as sounds zip around the stereo field, the composition conjures different architectures as a metallic glistening sounds out in tightly wound space, then mutates into a cavernous echo. Field recordings emerge, familiar yet hard to pin down, place names held back as electronic tones thread through water drops to breathe a sigh of relief.  ‘Behind the face of a rock, throwing stones (Rehearsal Music)’ is part of an ongoing project with the dance company Surface Area (choreographed by Nicole Vivien Watson), a collective project comprised of deaf and hearing artists. The project explores British Sign Language, D/deaf culture, Japanese culture and Butoh. The music is sensitive to the collaboration - playing with heard and felt sensation, working with sounds’ potential for moving the body. The sonic palette is more paired back than the first piece, it pulses and builds, creating space in which both deaf and hearing bodies can respond to the sonic textures and chattering objects, or the non-cochlear resonances that can be felt in the body.

In their work, they explore the fields of more-than-human composition, hybrid music and bio sonic systems, through the construction of bio-machines that translate the interaction between biological agents and musical algorithms into musical form.

This is a session of sonic explorations based on randomness, unorthodox musical scales, and yamaha dx7 synthesizer presets.

@salllvage (Rowan Savage) is a proud Kombumerri First Nations man living on Gadigal Land ('Sydney,' 'Australia'). He is a producer, DJ and dancer working at the intersection of queer club culture and connection with Country. He uses field recordings from Kombumerri Country ('Gold Coast') to make experimental electronic music. His DJ sets fuse underground influences from across the globe with a strong First Nations sensibility. He is influenced by Indigenous Futurisms, and by an ongoing engagement with vogue and ballroom culture. His art aims to inhabit and bridge the tensions between abstraction and emotion, the wild bush and the dancefloor, the personal and the social, authenticity and reconstruction.

What was a crucial sound experience in your life?
The moment I heard Lechuga Zafiro create a beat from water; the moment I read David Toop describe noise itself as a haunting; and most of all, the moment I understood that sound could be a path back to Culture.
