Where does the sound of the dot motor come from? 22.09.2024 – Where does the noise of the dot motor come from? Which car or motorcycle? And by whom was that sound made or recorded? Who used the jingles? And who came first? This article will answer all those questions. The sound of the dot engine has been familiar to many radio listeners of the Top 40 since October 1974. The record that rose high was given a red dot in the printed copy and on the radio it was accompanied by the sound of an engine, an orchestra and a singing lady (* more about that below). We have christened it 'the dot engine'. Joost den Draaijer was one stroke earlier on Hilversum III. He used the dot motor after the traffic information in the jingle "A hint for the road user", recorded by Ad 's-Gravesande. That was in the early '70s. Ferry Maat also grabbed the dot engine in the Soulshow. Maker Originally, the jingle comes from the jingle company PAMS in Dallas. It is cut 14 in series 27 titled Jet set from 1964, recorded for WABC in New York. For a long time, we wondered which car or motorcycle produced this sound. Until we simply looked in the PAMS Bible, a digital database of jingle guru Ken R. Deutsch with a list of all the basic jingles from the eponymous jingle series of PAMS. Because what do we see there at cut 14 in series 27? XKE Special. And what does it turn out to be (we didn't know that either)? An XKE Special is type of racing car of ... Jaguar. The Jaguar E-type is also referred to as Jaguar XK-E. Three generations of it were built between 1961 and 1974. The E-type revolutionised the design, performance and handling of sports cars. The price of these Jaguars was a lot lower than that of the competing models, which resulted in excellent sales. In 14 years, more than 70,000 units of the E-type were sold. YouTube is full of videos in which the sound of the engine can be heard. Origin It is not 100% clear where PAMS got the sound from. At least from an LP with sound effects, because in the basic recording (the second-to-last in the montage below) the tapping of the record can be heard clearly. In series 27, PAMS used many more (Jet Set) sounds, such as that of a springboard in a swimming pool or a speedboat. * By the way, the singing lady is called Gleni Thai / Rutherford, is of Indian descent and is originally called Brighteyes Longknife. She is also drawn on the cover of series 27, see the light green image above. The sound of the dot engine can also be heard on a 1956 single by singer Ray Burden, titled A Hot-Rodders Dream. Very special to hear the jingle in this way. And with that, the main question is answered: the dot engine from the Top 40 comes from Jaguar! 02.04.2012 - Edwin Evers, Giel Beelen, Dick Klees en Jan van de Putte. Deze vier overbekende radiostemmen vormen de basis van de jingledemo die het Genootschap radiojingles en –tunes vandaag uitbrengt. Geen enkel audio archief in de wereld presenteert zich op deze manier.
De demo laat een dwarsdoorsnede horen van het grootste jinglearchief van Nederland. Met jingles voor Radio 1 tot en met Radio 10, voor de beroemdste radiopersonalities en voor de bekendste radioprogramma’s. Van Ferry Maat tot Felix Meurders, van de Arbeidsvitaminen (AVRO) tot Zoekplaatje (VARA). De vier radiostemmen Edwin Evers (lb), Giel Beelen (rb), Dick Klees (ro) en Jan van de Putte (lo) hebben belangeloos aan de demo meegewerkt. De demo laat ook nooit uitgezonden en afgekeurde jingles horen voor onder meer Radio 2, de Top 40 en de TROS.
Verder zijn in de demo speciale jingleboodschappen te horen van Jon Wolfert (de baas van het grootste jinglebedrijf in de wereld JAM Creative Productions in Dallas) en de eveneens Amerikaanse jingleveteraan Tom Merriman (oprichter van TM, het oudste nog bestaande jinglebedrijf in de wereld).
