work I created with choreographer Goh Shou Yi, for a dance performance titled “A Visceral Experience I Can’t Explain” (with T.H.E Second Company). 

We discussed the metaphor of plastic sheets used in his performance in our early conceptual meetings, and how the material can be used to further symbolise a metaphysical separation between the inner awareness and the external experience. From these discussions, it prompted me to explore the possible sonic textures and effects that this material could achieve - to accompany the dance performance in its nuanced and tumultuous expressions. Working with various audio effects and resonators, these plastic sounds were played and manipulated live alongside a backing string score. This excerpt focuses on the processing and manipulation of the plastic elements.

Dear Elena (2019) by Nine Years Theatre is a play about the extent of evil and youth defiance. A mandarin-language play adapted and directed by Nelson Chia - from the Russian play, Dear Yelena Sergeyevna by Lyudmila Razumovskaya. The play builds to a climatic point in which the students rummage through the teacher’s home, in search for the key to a safe holding their examination papers.

The musicality is themed towards Blurred Lines by Robin Thicke, and the lyrics are interspersed across the different scenes for a scathing sense of the male gaze.

The Father (2018) by Pangdemonium Theatre Company is a play by Florian Zeller, directed by Tracie Pang, about an old man experiencing dementia. The musicality uses wind chimes, which is used as a sonic language to represent reality for the protagonist. The wind chimes gradually stutters and glitches as the protagonist’s condition worsens. During the play we hear glimpses and echoes of wind chimes. They are also re-introduced in the last scene when he is admitted into the nursing home, which helps pose questions of the protagonist’s reality perspectives from the start of the play.

Attempts (2018) by Rei Poh is an original interactive performance, written by Rei Poh, based off the book Attempts on Her Life by Martin Crimp. The musicality is has a science fiction theme where the world is being run by an artificial intelligence. The audience goes through different rooms and discovers clues as to why a girl’s life has been lost.
