"Kodama (木霊, 木魂 or 木魅) are spirits in Japanese folklore that inhabit trees, similar to the dryads of Greek mythology. The term is also used to denote a tree in which a kodama supposedly resides. The phenomenon known as yamabiko, when sounds make a delayed echoing effect in mountains and valleys, is sometimes attributed to this kind of spirit, and may also be referred to as "kodama".

Kodama are considered to nimbly bustle about mountains at will. Their outer appearance is very much like an ordinary tree, but if one attempts to cut it down, one would become cursed, it is thus considered to have some kind of mysterious supernatural power. The knowledge of those trees that have kodama living in them is passed down by the elderly of that area over successive generations and they are protected, and it is also said that trees that have a kodama living in them are of certain species. There is also a theory that when old trees are cut, blood could come forth from them."

Jinku is a Stockholm-based Kenyan electronic producer and DJ, who has been at the forefront of the NuNairobi movement. He is most well known as a founding member of the music collective East African Wave (EA WAVE), which came onto the scene in 2015. 

He’s been steadily refining his fusion of Afro House, R&B, and African percussion into a genre he defines as tribal downtempo while remixing for well-known music acts such as Branko, Daniel Haaksman, Frank Yamma, Mabiisi, Makadem and Ami Faku. 

Jinku has released music through respected labels such as Enchufada, Man Recordings, On The Corner Records, Banana Hill and Lump Records. His records have received support from Worldwide FM, Boiler Room, DJ Mag and The NATIVEmag.

In 2022 he curated music for XLR8R+ and contributed to the XLR8R Podcast showcasing the sounds of Nairobi. Both his albums Oasis Park III and Passenger 555 made it onto The NativeMag's 'Best R&B Projects of 2022' list at No.10 and No.7 respectively. Ableton has named him the city's Rising star.
