This is an old piece, a kind of a proof of concept piece but it has an interesting story behind it. One of my equipment, the Yamaha FS1R sound module, which is a formant/FM synth, has its synthesis diagram fit neatly into a hierarchical structure that can be related to language and Thai music. I could not help but be interested in the possibility of integrating the three together. So I converted a passage from a short story by J.G. Ballard to a code written to represent the hierarchy of the synth, the English language, and Thai music. The code controls every aspect of the FM engine, down to the operator level. I had to eliminate the formant part as it is too overwhelming. It took me quite a while to finish translating. But I got the sound I would not have thought of otherwise, so I am happy.
