Fantasy Ranch Reunion 2024 - Dj Chris Craze Set

I come from the roots of house, soul music and r&b. And “ I got my education” originally as a little kid
from The Philly Priest from The East, Neil Murray and to me the  originator of what is today 
called “rap”,  and then those radio years with Frankie Crocker and Jeffrey Troy,  who taught me the 
real meaning of soul.  

The art of the mix was a gift from two master’s,  Jim Burgess and Richie Kaczor, 
who let me in to the world of what is today house music and took away all the boundaries.  So many 
have inspired , helped, and encouraged me along the way,  but I am forever grateful  for the true 
believers who gave me a stage when rock was king and two turntables only brought doubt to club goers,  long before the rave and that term, EDM. 
 
And now for most dj’s I hear.., mixing is king, the art of the journey seems to be lost in a nonstop song-less digital sync of compressed beats.  This is not that.  It’s just my music today, put together the old fashion way by hand, and I hope a tribute to masters who paved the way for me to take on this journey in the first place.

At the risk of dance music blasphemy, I’m releasing a project I’ve had in my head for a long time.  The greatest commercial DJ Mix of all time, in my opinion, and that of many others, is “ Renaissance - The Mix Collection” by Sasha and Digweed.  Originally released in October of 1994, it became an instant classic for many ravers and clubbers across the globe. The mix started the entire DJ mix compilation market, and that is no overstatement.  The superb track selection and absolute mixing perfection delivered an indelible mark on dance music history that, to that point, could only be heard in the underground clubs, notably at Renaissance in Mansfield, England.

Thirty years on, this DJ Mix still sounds amazing to old and new listeners alike. There are too many compelling reasons why this mix works to list here.

Over the years, many of the tracks played across the three CDs have been remixed. Others have not. My thought was, what would it sound like if all three CDs were recreated track for track, using nothing but remixes?  

Apparently, I was not the only one who had this idea.  As I was compiling remixes, working on the mix in late 2024, I checked out the latest mix from the amazing Framewerk, and lo and behold, their NYE2025 set is almost a heavy recreation of Disc 1 of The Mix Collection.  First off, I wish I was at the club where they played this set.  Second, I thought the idea was now taken.  

Finally, I thought they released one track for which I desperately needed a remix of - Bladerunner - Til We Meet Again. 

In the end, I decided to continue with my project. My mix uses remixes from many different artists, including Framewerk. While breaks are my first love, I’m using a mix of 4/4 and breakbeat remixes to complete this project. I created my own edits for a few tracks for which I could not find a good remix. 

So here is Disc 1 of the “Re-Mix Collection.” Sourcing all the tracks was not easy. I found remixes on the usual sights like Beatport and Bandcamp.  Some remixes are quite close to the originals with breaks instead of 4/4, or slight alternate genres,  others like Mattr's remix of Mephisto are almost unrecognizable from the Renaissance version.

Renaissance The "Re-Mix" Collection - Disc 1

DEFUNK Presents: Liquid Love 2025 (Culture Shock, Andromedik, Kanine, Hybrid Minds, Krakota)

Here is disc 2 of Renaissance the “Re-Mix” collection by me - Off Meta. This mix has been a real labor of love. Again, I’ve done a track for recreation of the mix using nothing but remixes that I found across the web, on SoundCloud, Bandcamp, & I commissioned through fellow producers along with a few creations of my own. 

Disc 2 was substantially harder to find quality remixes of every track. I connected with a few producers that created 5 completely new versions of tracks, including Let’s Get This Party Started and She Holds the Key, both done by the prolific Ranj Kaler. Blue Amazon gave me his unreleased remix of Fluke - "Slid" now available on his amazing Patreon page.  Rising breakbeat star Matty Wright delivered an updated progressive breaks remix of “Always” by Fishbone Beat that sounds both 90’s classic and modern all at the same time. It may be my favorite remix on disc 2. Veteran, Noel Sanger took the all time classic “Talk to Me” Sasha mix by Hysterix and turned into a modern progressive breaks beauty. Lost Astronaut took on the task of remixing what is arguably the least memorable song from the Disc 2, and turned it into the perfect come-down closing track. 

Finally, like Disc 1, some tracks like MBG “Trance 1” and Funtopia - “Do You Wanna” simply had no remixes, so I created my own edits that I hope are worthy of this mix.  I also used a few remixes from Jamie Rainbow that don’t stray too far from the original but have just a touch of updated flair to make them stand out. 

I appreciate hearing from you old-schoolers who love the original Renaissance like I do. Let me know your thoughts on Disc 2. I’m on to Disc 3 where I’m hoping to big with even more updated remixes of these classics.

take your mind back to july 2001; dark tribal prog rules britain's superclubs & britain's sound rules the world. berlin is not yet officially cool, cigarettes are smoked on dancefloors, dance music slower than 125 bpm is punishable by death & deadmau5 has not yet been born; it is a time of great joy.

the scene is a room full of samplers, synthesizers & class c narcotics - it is chong's palace studio (mark II), lair of king unique & sweating over a remix are two young men called matthew.

ring ring!... ring ring!...ring r-

KU: "hello?"

BBC: "hello it's the bbc here, can i speak to someone from king unique please"

KU: "oh, right - um hello"

BBC: "right - you know how we asked if you'd do a king unique essential mix in the autumn for us?"

KU: "err, yes"

BBC: "well, would you like to do it a bit sooner than we discussed? quite a lot sooner in fact?"

KU: "um... maybe?"

BBC: "great! the thing is (NAME REMOVED AT BBC LAWYER'S INSISTENCE) promised us a mix months ago & they've just told us it won't be ready after all. so you'd be doing us a huge favour if you stepped in"

KU: "right. just out of interest did ali & sharam say why they couldn't do it?"

BBC: "i couldn't possibly comment"

KU: "i see. well, we are insanely busy but we'd obviously like to help.... how soon were you thinking? this month or next?"

BBC: "oh definitely this month. in fact, um, more like, you know, er, this week actually"

KU: "this week!!!!????"

BBC: "...................... yes. by friday night in fact."

KU: "& you're aware that today is wednesday????!!"

so there you have it, the behind the scenes story of how we came to turn round our first essential mix in under 72 hours from a standing start, armed only with a mountain of vinyl, several samplers & a huge computer struggling to run 4 channels of pro-tools with less than half the power of a current iphone. this is King Unique Broadcast 0 if you like, the first time we hit the airwaves & not a bad way to start :)

to add to the nostalgia i've included the handy cassette case with tracklisting that Mixmag used to print each month for all the home-tapers out there - if you'd told us about Soundcloud back then we'd have burnt you as a witch.

An electronic music enthusiast who follows a diverse set of genres, artists, and labels.
Endlessly inspired by the art of the mixtape.  

20 years ago, Justin began DJing and remixing underground dance music in south Texas, USA.  Originally focused on Progressive styles of House and Trance, collecting and mixing vinyl records.  In later years, his taste evolved with breakbeats and electro sounds while making the conversion to digital formats between 2006 and 2008.  By 2010, he was DJing and producing an eclectic blend of sub-genres he dubbed as "Eclectica."  The goal of Eclectica is to be unpredictable yet digestible, offering a variety of styles.  Recordings from 2006 to 2011 were published under the moniker "DJ Just In Time"  but nearly a decade later, the quarantine of 2020 created an opportunity for the reinvention of JUSTiNTiME, compiling all forms of Bass music and recording eclectica mixes monthly.
