Jiye Mera Desh is more than just a patriotic song!
 
It is a movement to bring about a gentle nationalism within the context of a broader, more humane and value based world vision. Taking its inspiration from Tagore’s poem, “Where the mind is without fear”, the song highlights the importance of the choices that individuals make in shaping the country. 
 
For Rajan Raju, who envisioned this movement, Jiye Mera Desh embodies his hope for a more unified India, his wish for every Indian to shed their differences and cast aside their prejudices. Through the medium of music, he hopes to spread the word. He states, “I had been deeply disturbed by the virulent positions being taken in the national elections. Divisions – caste, language, class, and religion – had taken centre stage. As a nation, we seem to have entirely lost the ability to strive jointly and in harmony for the greater good of the country. Tagore’s evocative poem provided the inspiration for the song which seeks to bring back to centre stage the ideals of our founding fathers when India gained independence.”
 
To make this vision a reality, Rajan created the song in collaboration with young musician Rajiv Sundaresan. The song was composed and arranged by Rajiv Sundaresan and its lyrics were penned by Manoj Yadav. Shankar Mahadevan, Vishal Dadlani, Salim Merchant, Rajiv Sundaresan, Paroma Dasgupta, Rishikesh Kamerkar and Ramya Kapadia have sung the song. Sharat Chandra Pasra has directed a video series set to the song. The logo has been designed by Designism CC&G and reflects the inspiration of the initiative.
 
The diversity of India is represented through a fusion of music that involves various classical traditions of India but set to a contemporary tune and sung in multiple languages.
  
The initiative does not have any commercial agenda and has been funded privately with many of the team working on a pro-bono basis. Rajan believes that the spirit of patriotism and nationalism cannot and should not be commercialized.

The four of us—Paddy, Arvind, Deven, and Gopi—met years ago in grad school at the Indian Institute of Management in Calcutta, India, and became close friends. Soon after we met, Paddy, Arvind, and Deven founded a rock band called the Joka Band Stand (named after a bus route) that remains a vibrant musical expression on campus. Our professional lives had since scattered us around the world—Singapore, Seattle, San Francisco, Chicago. We had remained in touch with each other and with our music, and decided to come together recently in a creative project and record a song.

Written and composed by Paddy, the song, Kirtan Blues, speaks to our need for spirituality in an era of increasing social inequality and religious conflict worldwide.

This song was born from a vision and reflects who we are—global wanderers, adventurous spirits through different musical traditions, curious experimenters, and most importantly, believers in the fact that life is short, and that while you do something for a living, you also need to do something for a life. We recorded this song over several months, with individual tracks being laid down across the world from wherever we were.

The blues originated in the African American communities in the Deep South of the United States around the end of the 19th century. The blues form is characterized by a call and 
response pattern, a trance like rhythm, and a repetitive effect. Kirtan, which originated in India’s Bhakti yoga (yoga of love) devotional traditions, also follows a call and response chant form. Both Kirtan and the blues contain stories, narratives, and ballads. Both are spiritual in nature. 

This is our dedication, offering, and gift to each of you who has touched and influenced us in some way. It’s also our way of showing our gratitude and love to our friends and families who have supported us all these years and kept the flame alive.
