Theory Therapy’s first cassette release comes from Concave Reflection aka Tommy Paslaski, one-third of Chicago-based group Purelink.

Calm but rarely completely beatless, The Best People Are Like Water hovers in the interstice between the club and the comedown. The tape consists of 11 immersive tracks that split the difference between atmospheric downtempo and hypnagogic ambient. Side A is predominantly beat-based, channeling the best elements of ’90s chillout room music, while side B is a more celestial affair — the aural equivalent of noctilucent clouds swirling slowly in the sky.

The album displays many of the qualities found in Purelink's music — syncopated breakbeats, pristinely mixed drums and airy atmospherics — but an added sense of intimacy runs across its 11 tracks. Paslaski has described his process as "layering and layering until I have a cohesive thought, then sometimes playing my loop pedal cello stuff over it and seeing where it takes me". This improvisational approach translates into an album that feels aleatory, organic and extremely personal, as though it was produced by some arcane and abstract method, like wind roiling midnight air or slowly crystallising water.

The Best People Are Like Water was mastered by Joseph Buchan aka Other Joe. Ben (kindtree) consulted on mixing for the A side. All tracks were written and produced by Tommy Paslaski.

There are a limited run of 50 cassettes, all made from recycled materials.

An epic strings mix fit for a film, recorded in Chicago.

Theory Therapy 34 is a highly immersive strings recording pieced together by Concave Reflection aka Tommy Paslaski, one-third of Chicago-based group Purelink. The mix feels like a soundtrack to an on-screen drama, not just because strings are commonly used in films or that they can capture specific emotions so well, but also in the way that each of Tommy’s selections feel like subtle thematic shifts. 

As you may already know, we’re releasing an 11-track tape with Tommy on March 4th. It’s our first physical release as a label and we can’t wait for you to hear the full album. In the meantime, we feel like this mix and interview will more than suffice. Enjoy.

Theory Therapy 39 is a strangely beautiful balm of textural drifts and atmospheric leftfield by Alma G. Ferrer aka Mim. 

Based in Mexico City, Alma is an art historian and founder of Mitamine Lab, one of the longest-running and best mix series I can think of. She’s also a unique selector and musical storyteller so we're very happy to have her contribute to Theory Therapy.

There’s so much love in this mix. It was recorded in Mim's mum’s garden while they both recovered from COVID and there's a playful, almost psychedelic quality to it. “I can't smoke or drink so this has been a mix created between plants, medicines, coffee, tea and lots of elderberry gummies.”

Pour Rappel, Avatar invite en 1994 des artistes à détourner le téléphone, objet quotidien par excellence, et à l’utiliser comme diffuseur, comme enregistreur ou encore comme lieu d’échange. À titre de balises, Avatar leur pose les questions suivantes : comment transmuter la banalité des échanges sonores qui caractérisent le téléphone? Comment peut-on intervenir sur les sons qui le déterminent et sur les codes d’échange qu’il impose? Cette publication est une appropriation de l’outil téléphonique et une réflexion sur ses caractéristiques propres.

Rappel est un projet qui s’étend sur une période de deux ans au cours de laquelle les artistes occupent une ligne téléphonique réservée au projet, entre le 15 septembre 1994 et le 26 mai 1995. Le 7 janvier 1995, les artistes de Rappel investissent l’émission Les chants magnétiques de Mario Gauthier à la Chaîne culturelle de la Société Radio-Canada. Toutes les expérimentations sont enregistrées et compilées par Christof Migone d’Avatar. Rappel paraît finalement en 1996.

For Rappel, Avatar invited artists to orchestrate a détournement of the telephone—that epitome of ordinariness—using it to broadcast, record, or host exchanges. To guide the artists, Avatar asked the following questions: How might the telephone’s characteristically banal sound exchanges be transformed? What could be done to its identifying sounds and the codes of communication they impose? Rappel subverts the telephonic instrument and reflects on its fundamental nature.

Rappel was a two-year project. Artists worked with a dedicated phone line between September 15, 1994, and May 26, 1995. On January 7, 1995, they took over Mario Gauthier’s Les chants magnétiques on Radio-Canada’s Chaîne culturelle. Their experiments were recorded and compiled by Avatar’s Christof Migone. Rappel was at last released in 1996.
