Here is a sound effect I made for a sci fi jet pack. 

At the beginning it has a mechanical clink and whir to signify the jetpack being spooled up, which moves into the actual jetpack noise of flames/various sci fi feedback/oscillation.

Clink and whir were made with hitting pottery with various objects(clink is a hit on the body and the whir is a scrape on the ridges. The jetpack noise itself was made with lighting multiple matches at once, close to the mic.

All sounds made in Pro Tools 11 and recorded with AT4033 microphone
