The Moon, Mars, And Venus  Kanizzle Signal Path Vol 4

25 years ago today, Tupac Amaru Shakur left this plane of existence.  I had just begun my freshman year at Ohio State...and one of the biggest influences of my adolescence was gone….

I started this remix 10 years ago, and finished it yesterday.  I offer it to you as not only a celebration this man, yet also as a song who’s lyrics are just as relevant today as they were my Junior year in high school when it dropped….I’ve always felt like this track, the second verse in particular, most fully encapsulates who he was as an artist.  

This one is dedicated to everyone that grew up in the 90s in any Amerikkkan city ravaged by the crack epidemic. Pat yourself on the back of your made it this far…that was a tough ride.

I present to you, the gnarly beast known as Pumpkin Patch.  This is a track I started almost 5 years ago, and forgot about....until last night!  This is definitely on the dark, dirty, and grimy side.

I could spend hours mixing and modifying this baby, but I thought I'd just say eff it and give it to you like it is as a celebration of hitting 10k listens on my soundcloud.  Big things in store for 2014 with both my music and Subatomica.

OH....and there's no loops or producer pack bs in this....but there is a sample from the 80's....see if you can guess it!

Pumpkin Patch

Remix I did for DC area progressive hip hoppers Rosetta Stoned.  Based on the songs topic of discussion, the explosion of guitar and drums at the end was inspired by the thought of Lenny White (drummer on Bitches Brew and Return to Forever) and Hendrix getting head while they played.  Yeah.

I was getting ready to fly back from a gig (and chasing waterfalls) on Maui in January when @Mochipet texted me and asked me to be a part of this Acid Bass compilation he was dreaming up that would support MAPS.  I said sure, of course, psychedelics are coooool….and almost the entire track came together on that flight.  Due to some indirect magic courtesy of @annamorgan_dj and @thebeatkitty , I got connected to @rider-shafique at right around the same time and of course this seemed like the perfect opportunity to collab with one of the dopest mc’s in the solar system.  This song has actually been done since February and just needed a little love on the mix, but in my other life I’m the marketing director at a natural foods supermarket in Taos, NM and pandemic life has me slackin on the music tip and grindin on that grocery lyfe tip.  So, finally, here it is!  Happy Thanksgiving!  Please wear a mask!

A two song project. Black Erasure and Fringe

Black erasure is an excerpt from the book “Thoughts of an Angry Black Man” that addresses the historical marginalization, ostracization and oppression of Black folks.

If people and communities are not recognized as existing then are their experiences, their lives and the products of their being.. meaningful?

Black Erasure is a critique of the ways in which Africans and people of African descent have been dehumanized, dispossessed and removed from the western awareness.

It's about more than gentrification, it's about more than dispossession of land, it's about more than the police being an active executioner for the state in an attempts to eradicate black men.. it's about the continued system that allows all of those aforementioned barbarism to continue and all the people that are complicit in the destruction black civilization. How could anybody with any awareness of how our prison industrial complex works not want to reform it? Do people care about the lives of black people disappeared by the carceral system ?

What role do we all play?

The second piece "fringe" is a three part examination of metaphysics, epistemology, contemporary economic theories, personal prospects for prosperity and the possibility of developing of sustainable living practices. The content ranges from the esoteric such as the existential question of why we are alive to the very pertinent and corporal such as police misconduct, expectations for the oppressed and liberation movements.

The reality of being fringe is the experience of being marginalized, overlooked, dismissed and how that can motivate a person or group of people to seek autonomy, to make themselves visible and to be intentioned about affecting the world around them

Presented in a tangle of polysyllabic word play, no choruses and dense internal & external rhyme schemes, you get a lot of heart, emotion and curiosity.

- what is seemingly free association, is not - the rhyme pattern and literary devices are purposeful and arranged as a puzzle of sorts for the listener to decipher. Each set of lyrics has a thematic thread tied very closely to the recurring notions of hegemony, inequity, iniquity, identity construction, the conflicts inherent in billions of people living, and the human capacity for resilience, adaption, and collective partnership in solving problems.
