Design Matters with Debbie Millman: Aaron Draplin

Bill Moggridge was a brilliant industrial and interaction designer and co-founder of design firm IDEO. He designed the first laptop computer, the GRiD Compass and pioneered interaction design as a discipline. 

Bill also taught at the Royal College of Art in London and Stanford University. He authored 'Designing Interactions' (MIT Press) which was named one of the 10 Best Innovation and Design Books of 2006 by BusinessWeek. Before his death in 2012, Bill was the Director of the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York.

In this audio interview with Debbie Millman, he discusses the evolution, design and life to come of the laptop, the 20 year arch of technology and the meaning of human-centered design. Rest in Peace, Bill, we really miss you.

Design Matters with Debbie Millman: Bill Moggridge

Erik Spiekermann is author, information architect, type designer (FF Meta, ITC Officina, FF Unit et al) and author of books and articles on type and typography. He founded MetaDesign, Germany’s largest design firm, in 1979 and is responsible for corporate design programmes for Audi, Skoda, Volkswagen, Lexus, Heidelberg Printing, and Bosch, as well as way-finding projects like Berlin Transit, Düsseldorf Airport and many others. In 1988 he started FontShop (http://fontshop.com), a company for production and distribution of electronic fonts. He is board member of the German Design Council and Past President of the ISTD International Society of Typographic Designers, as well as the IIID International Institute for Informationdesign. 

He now runs Edenspiekermann with offices in Berlin, Amsterdam, London, Stuttgart & San Francisco. In 2001, he redesigned The Economist magazine in London. His book for Adobe Press, Stop Stealing Sheep (http://j.mp/XEZlBv) has been reprinted several times and translated into German, Russian and Italian. His corporate font family for Nokia was released in 2002. In 2003 he received the Gerrit Noordzij Award from the Royal Academy in Den Haag. His type system DB Type for Deutsche Bahn was awarded the Federal German Design Prize in gold for 2006. In May 2007 he was the first designer to be elected into the Hall of Fame by the European Design Awards for Communication Design.

Design Matters with Debbie Millman: Erik Spiekermann

John Conant Flansburgh, commonly called Flans or Flansy, is one half of the alternative-rock duo They Might Be Giants (http://www.theymightbegiants.com). In 1982, he co-founded the band with John Linnell, and continues to play a primary role in the duo as a songwriter, singer, and musician. Flansburgh primarily provides lead vocals and guitar for the band in recordings and at live shows, during which he often leads the band and provides frequent banter. Also among Flansburgh's skills are his capabilities as a music video director. He has also directed videos for Harvey Danger, Frank Black, Soul Coughing, and Ben Folds Five. On a less professional level, Flans frequently puts together iMovie slideshow videos for They Might Be Giants songs. These videos, which all feature mostly previously released songs, and are released through TMBG's YouTube channel.

Design Matters with Debbie Millman: Karl Heiselman

Michael Arad is an architect who moved to New York City from Israel in 1999. At 34, Arad was selected from 5,201 competitors as the winning designer of the World Trade Center Memorial. After a behind-the-scenes war of wills, we now celebrate his vision with a with "Reflecting Absence", a pair of pools set 30 feet deep in the footprints of the downed towers, with cascading waterfalls surrounded by the names of the dead and a "living park" at ground level meant to symbolize life and rebirth.
