Moving In The Right Direction Guest Mix - Joe Lyons-Rising [Feb 2024]

We are thrilled to have Sleepy Freeman as our guest on Hip-House Radio!

There’s not much to Sleepy. He loves life, music and those that get it. After 35 years of weaving through the evolution of the Toronto club scene and interacting with peers he highly respects, the DJ bug has finally hit him after sitting in the shadows for decades just appreciating the experience by spending every moment on the dancefloor. In 2016, he started up WDFA Radio with Dan Szabo, which at the time was a monthly live stream, showcasing the talent Toronto has to offer, from those that deserve shine, but don’t get the opportunity as well as those who are accomplished, experienced and world class. 

Now there is a show once a week with different DJs hosting on WDFA Radio with Sleepy hosting his own show called “The Sleepy Experiment”. Sleepy has since become a requested talent, playing around the city alongside names like Nick Holder, Tyrone Solomon, Demuir, Jason Hodges, Jovonn, DJ Mes, Gene King, and LeBaron James at various venues in the city.

His style is based on his own journey through the underground house music scene as well as his love for music as a whole, from Afro to Deep to Jackin to Soulful to Disco to Tech that’ll snap your neck.

So thrilled to have the infamous Filta Freqz as our guests on Hip-House Radio Mixtape 18!

Marco & Simon meet at School, Soon discovering they had the same interests in the Hip Hop movement that had filtered over to the U.K from America in the early 80's (Electro, Graffiti , Breakdancing and Scratch mix Djing). Discovering the breaks that the Djs were cutting up and playing from all Genre's of Music (Funk, Jazz, Disco, Soul, Dub, Reggae) , Hunting down the samples & breaks of the Hip Hop tracks they were listening to. 

Then boom the Acid House scene took over the U.K and they were both soon attending various Raves up and down the country at weekend's. Soon there was a change in the records they were both hunting down and a different rhythm and beat was taking over. Both of them brought some equipment and decided to take up production and started making tracks in the studio under the name Filta Freqz focusing on the Funky Jackin House Scene.

Hip-House Radio is back with episode 21, featuring Toronto's own KAELO!! 

Known for his dynamic and genre-spanning sets, KAELO first made a name for himself in the Toronto electronic music scene in 1999 at System Soundbar, performing live PAs for the legendary Breathe nights. He began producing under the name JK47, alongside DJ Jet, and the duo were featured on Meat Katie's BBC Radio One Essential Mix. 

KAELO's diverse musical tastes are reflected in his style, and his ability to blend groovy beats with creative melodic riffs and sampling results in his brand of house, techno, and breakbeats that are as unique as they are catchy. In addition to his solo work, KAELO has produced music with Suicide Brothers, Boys of Summer, and Disco Fight Club, and has collaborated with other artists such as Paranoid Jack, Jamie Kidd, Lebaron James, Myagi, and Rey Gelato. His early 2000s back catalogue of vinyl JK47 EPs is currently being reissued with a fresh run of pressings thanks to AGT Records (preorder available now).

This is a very special VIP edit as a thank you to the man that took DJing and Hip-Hop to what it is today.  Without Grandmaster Flash, DJ Kool Herc and Africa Bambaataa, the music and culture we have loved for decades simply wouldn't exist!  

The original Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel was given to me on a mixtape when I was 5 and the rest is history.....I was hooked!

June 2019: 
Grandmaster Flash has become the first DJ to win the Polar Music Prize, often dubbed the "Nobel Prize For Music".

The prize was founded by Stig Anderson, better known as ABBA's lyricist and manager, in 1989. Previous winners include Led Zeppelin, BB King, Metallica, and Paul McCartney.

Flash, real name Joseph Saddler, accepted the prize from the King of Sweden, saying the award was "in honour of every DJ, every rapper, every graffiti artist, and every breakdancer".

He further commented: "This thing that I did had not existed before, and I am one of many where I come from. It ended up being called hip-hop, taking the drum break from pop, rock, jazz, blues, funk, disco, R+B, and using duplicate copies of records. I would take one section and repeat it over and over again."
