In the early days of the blues, musicians wrote highly sensual songs to entertain young audiences in Juke Joints throughout the south. Often the lyrics had to be toned down to play on the radio so artists like Robert Johnson (“I Believe I’ll Dust My Broom”), Wynonie Harris (“Lolly Pop Mama”), and more recently John Prine (“Sam Stone”), employed clever metaphors to disguise the sex and drugs depicted in their songs. This word play brought mystery to the stories being told and encouraged multiple interpretations as well. “Sweet Mint Tea” continues this tradition, with provocative lyrics embedded in an old-timey bar song vibe just begging for the listener to sing along.

Johnny Mc Farlane wrote the music to my lyrics for Sweet Mint Tea, our first collaboration. I was impressed how Johnny created an Irish/New Orleans bar-song vibe that allowed my lyrics to say more than they deserved. His voicing is surprisingly unique, and I'm sure everyone in the bar will humming the chorus when they leave for the night. This is the original acoustic version Johnny sent me on a Sunday morning a few months ago. He released a lively version with some fine electric guitar licks and tight harmony a few weeks later. Put in your earbuds and buckle up!
