The pieces in this collection ['Six Studies'] are studies, of a sort, and all written in 2021 or 2022. Along with most other things I’ve produced in the same period, there’s an unintended, relentless sentimentality to them – inevitable, I suppose, if working with diatonic clusters. They’re all very simple, and, with the exception of Piano and Accompaniment, aren’t really “compositions” so much as demonstrations of what instruments are busy doing while we might be busy thinking about other things. That’s not to ignore a performer, and really it’s the opposite: these pieces are unconstructed, they are timbre, they begin as studies of (for instance) the piano and end as studies of particular fingers at a particular piano, which is much more interesting. Piano and Accompaniment seems an outlier, perhaps, as a piece with more moving parts, but it isn’t – it’s the same concerns for ensemble, with some very faint shaping from me.

My friend Alex tried to record her playing a famous Rachmaninov piece...as a Christmas present for her mother. This is the journey that she went on to get there...after two hours.
I re-notated what she played for ensemble with her original playing as an edited electronic track.

old songs/ new songs/ together song(s) explores connection, and memory through songs, loop pedals and improvisation. we each made mixtapes of songs we like or feel connected to in some way, and whilst these songs aren’t explicitly referenced or shared in the piece, we improvise around the feelings we hold around these songs. we are also using loop pedals to capture moments of our improvisation we each enjoy, which in a way, connects our individual mixtapes to our individual experiences of the piece.

composer hugh davies spent 11 days in hospital  in 1975. 
he kept a record of the food he ate.
he was a vegetarian and wasn't catered for very well. 
he had a bad time eating eggs and cheese. 

i turned the items he chose into chords. 
each chord is a meal he had.

the chords were presented to many players.
they then chose one or two notes to play from each chord. 
they performed these in their own times in their own homes. 
i have then compiled them, making their own choices, based on my choices, which were based on the choices hugh made, which were based on the choices made by the catering staff.
