JMC: A Sign of the Times

JMC is actually a nice young man from Leeds by the name of Jason Cooper. He describes his local scene: "The fact that Leeds has two universities means that there are always lots of young people about and it would probably be fair to say that it's presently the clubbing capital of the north of England."

And club music he makes. With just his PC, Cooper has been producing tracks ranging from rump-shaking breakbeat to cheeky dance-pop to ethereal trance.

It all started about 11 years ago, when Cooper took the big plunge...he bought himself a couple of turntables and a mixer. "I used to fancy myself as a bit of a DJ," he says. "Unfortunately, the only people who got to listen to my mixes were a few of my mates. I still have a few tapes.

"After I got a PC, I began to spend less and less time, and money, on records, until eventually, they were just left taking up space in the corner of my room. I decided to sell the whole lot--records, turntables and mixer, as at the time, I thought I'd be better off with the cash!"

Naturally, we had to ask if he had any regrets: "Looking back, I think I would have liked to have kept hold of at least some of the records. It took me about four years to build the collection up and there were quite a few rarities and classic house tracks in there that I had paid exorbitant prices to get hold of. The guy who bought the lot was definitely a lucky person."

But Cooper's new fans are lucky, too. More time on the PC means more of those great JMC tunes. And with all the new programs available--like Sonic Foundry's ACID Music, of which Cooper is a big fan--musicians can realize their music autonomously, and without spending too much money.

"If it wasn't for the PC, I would have never even thought of producing my own music," Jason says. "The PC allowed me to begin experimenting for just a minimal outlay. I think I will probably want to get my hands on some proper (electronic instruments) sometime or another, but at the moment, cost is a big stumbling block. It's pretty hard to justify buying expensive hardware when there are bills to pay!"

Despite having bills, Cooper's goals are modest: "At the moment, I'm quite happy just knowing that people all over the world are enjoying listening to my music. It would be nice to make a living out of it, but it is not something that I have ever seriously thought about. I still do it primarily as a hobby."

But for just a "hobby," Cooper is quickly earning a name for himself as his remix of 303 Reactor's "Confusion," is now featured on the HP CD Writer Music Compilation. And he has also been featured on the UK Kosovo Refugee Relief Compilation, a D.A.M. CD comprising 26 U.K. artists with all artist proceeds going to the British Red Cross for use in their campaign in Kosovo.

Perhaps Cooper couldn't have been born at a better time, as technology has benefited him immensely on many levels. "For people like myself," he says, "being able to digitally distribute my music all over the world is something that's quite amazing." Amazing indeed.
