"The Books of Magra" is a seven volume epic that explores human experience and potential through physical phenomena, mysticism, and the nature of consciousness.
In addition to the literary scale of this work, there is an equally extensive musical offering that compliments and deepens the stories and concepts.

On October 21st, I gave a first time ever overview presentation of the complete vision of The Books of Magra, for the AIR (Artist In Residence) series hosted by Keiko Honda.
 
I discussed the books, the music, and my use of symbologies to assemble and integrate all of these dynamic and extensive elements.
 
In this video, I discuss the origins of The Books of Magra. It began with a suicidal thought, and lead to a journey to Japan to study samurai philosophy. And then I had a vision of a unique cosmic ceremony that presented me with the centrepiece of the entire work.

AIR Series Presentation Excerpt #1

This piece was inspired by rain and its unique spatial properties. It is also a commentary on the use of land and space in Vancouver, British-Columbia in the wake of continuing architectural development.
All sound sources were recorded (apart from the dripping tap water in the middle of the track)in my neighbourhood, and then sound designed in my home studio.

This track is for "Mapping the Wonderous Westside," a participatory mapping project by The Vancouver Artists Colloquium. This project is to explore the relationship between place and our identities and discover an interesting way of knowing and expressing the spaces we make and use in everyday life—and the relationships that they create. A new way of engaging with the Vancouver West Side will emerge and become an interactive online map to be shared with the world.

Joël is a Vancouver-based composer and writer. He has also worked in film as a sound designer and director.

At an early age, Joël was intrigued by sound, an attraction that began with his father's record collection and lead to his study of music composition. In addition to this profound fascination with sound, Joël was equally drawn to mysticism, mythology and science. This cocktail of interests took him on to further studies of the martial arts, yoga, meditation and bioenergetic modalities.

Over the years, Joël has initiated several innovative projects focusing on altered states of consciousness and healing through music and sound. His writing, classes and workshops, concerts, and film work focus on creating a deeper understanding of the relationship of sound to consciousness, self-knowledge, compassion, and spirituality.
