In 2020 Jo Thomas was commissioned by IOU to create a new musical work to be played on sculptural sound installation Speaking Tubes. Her final work titled ‘In a Still Place’ was written in 4 weeks of lockdown during April to May 2020. It is a work that explores different states of stillness whilst acknowledging sometimes rapid change. 

A unique spatialised version of ‘In a Still Place’ was created and shared online on 4 June 2020. There are four small movements to the work making a 25-minute electronic music work: Static, Cover, Macabre and Home.

Of this piece Jo Thomas says: 

“For this work, I decided to focus on what was immediately around me. The sound of birdsong the static nature of lockdown, silences, fear, grief gaps, communal warmth, media messages, glitches and a home. The speaking tubes are designed as vortex cannons. I always had this in mind when I was composing music for projection inside a sculptural space. The music is composed to move freely allowing perspectives change and alter.”

The music contains elements of Chinese Kunqu Opera and is based on a story in Water Margin: The hero Lin Chong was persecuted by Gao Qiu and has escaped to Liang Mountain in a snowstorm without any choice. The music portrays helplessness, anger, and sadness in his inner world, and imitates human crying sound through techniques.

His sound—vintage but never pastiche—is deep and bursting with colorful, emotive textures that come alive on his Nina mix. The Edmonton-based artist has stitched together an hour of mostly unreleased originals, alongside collaborations with Nik 7 and Patrick Holland.

Antanniseven hat mein kleiner Bruder als Kleinkind immer zu "Kastanie" gesagt, das ist mir lebhaft in Erinnerung geblieben. Das Stück ist eine Hommage an meinen Bruder, der wie ich auch Künstler geworden ist!

My little brother used to say Antanniseven to "chestnut" (Kastanie) when he was a toddler, and I remember it vividly. The piece is a tribute to my brother, who, like me, also became an artist!
