L'Histoire d ‘Ell is a musical representation of 75 years of village history from the Limburg village of Ell (The Netherlands). This period can be roughly divided into three parts: rural village, war and reconstruction. The first part gives an impression of Ell before the war, the peace and beauty of the countryside. It also includes the story of the shoemaker who stood chatting  in front of his shop all week and went crazy at the weekend to finish his work on time. The only industry in the village, a "fuus" (dairy factory) and a brewery musical portrayed in this part. The second part describes the events during the war with the searchlights of the ’German Wehrmacht’, the shooting downing of British bombers by German fighters and the compelling report of the setting on fire and eventual collapse of the mill (a long solo by the entire percussion section). The third part tells the story of the new paths that were taken after the war. People worked hard on the reconstruction, farms were restored and agriculture intensified. The dynamic community life, characteristic of the years 1979-1990, is also reflected in this last part which ends with a festive closing.

L’HISTOIRE D’ELL - Leon Vliex.

Bedrich Smetana is the father of modern Czech music. Sadly, fate struck him in 1874. Shortly after the premiere of his opera "Two Widows," he became deaf. This misfortune could not break him. Between 1874 and 1879, he composed the impressive cycle *My Homeland* (Má Vlast), six symphonic poems. Part 5 of the cycle is ’Tábor, the Hussite Fortress’. The piece is a fantasy on the battle chorale ’Die ihr seid die Kämpfer Gottes’ (They are the Fighters of God).

TABOR FROM ’MA VLAST’ - Bedrich Smetana / arr. Martin Koekelkoren.

John Clifford Heed was born in Hacketstown, New Jersey on April 23, 1862 and died in Newark, New Jersey on February 12, 1908. He was an American composer and musician. When he was 17, he became director of the George Harrick Band in Providence, Rhode Island. The march ’In Storm and Sunshine’ is Heed’s best known work.

IN STORM AND SUNSHINE - John Clifford Heed / arr. Dirk Verholle

Poet Christina Rossetti (1830-1894) wrote a new rhyming Christmas carol for a monthly magazine titled "In the Bleak Midwinter." Composer Gustav Holst saw this poem in 1906 and composed the music for it. For a short time, this song was known under the title “Cranham."

IN THE BLEAK MIDWINTER - Gustav Holst / arr. Willem Flisijn.

In 2019, the municipality of Altena was formed through the merger of the Brabant municipalities of Woudrichem, Werkendam, and Aalburg. Elementa was created to mark this occasion. Leon Vliex composed this piece commissioned by ’JA! Jeugdfanfare Altena’. Elementa represents both the coming together of the individual municipalities and a number of characteristic features of the region. These meanings take shape through the four natural elements: water, earth, wind, and fire.

ELEMENTA - Leon Vliex.

A three-movement solo work for flugelhorn and small wind orchestra. Johann Baptist Georg Neruda (born in Prague in 1707; died in Dresden in 1770) was a Bohemian violinist, conductor, and composer. After his training in Prague, he gained increasing recognition as a violinist and conductor in both Prague and Germany. In 1750, he became first violinist and subsequently concertmaster of the Dresden Court Orchestra. His best-known work, the 'Concerto for Trumpet, Strings, and Basso Continuo in E-flat Major', was originally written for the *corno da caccia*.

CONCERTO PER CORNO PRIMO (Part 1) - Johann Baptist Georg Neruda / arr. André Reichling.

This English traditional song is about the estate of the same name, located in the northeast of England. Well-known singers such as Sarah Brightman and Charlotte Church have performed it. However, the version by Simon and Garfunkel is the most famous.

SCARBOROUGH FAIR - Traditional / arr. Ron Daelemans.

The 'Vorspiel' (Prelude-Chorale) from Humperdinck's famous fairy-tale opera ’Hansel and Gretel’. The rising middle class of the 19th century sought entertainment without excessive profundity, and the fairy-tale opera ’Hansel and Gretel’ seemed ideal for meeting this need. The story is easy to follow, and the music—partly based on genuine folk melodies yet exuding a Wagnerian atmosphere—is highly accessible. None other than Richard Strauss conducted the premiere on December 23, 1893, after which ’Hansel and Gretel’ embarked on a triumphant tour of opera houses across Germany and the world.

HÄNSEL UND GRETEL (Vorspiel) - Engelbert Humperdink / arr. Sandor Hendriks.

A magnificent clarinet concerto for two accomplished clarinetists. This concerto consists of three movements and demands strong technical proficiency from the soloists. František Vincenc Kramář (better known by his German name, Franz Krommer) was born in Kamenice on November 17, 1759, and died in Vienna on January 8, 1831. After completing his training, he worked for a time as a violinist before becoming a choir director in Pécs. In 1794, he moved to Vienna, where he established a reputation as a teacher and composer. In 1815, he entered the service of Emperor Franz I, who appointed him court conductor and court composer in 1818. His music, influenced by Mozart, is elegant and rich in melody.

CONCERTO POUR DEUX CLARINETTES (Part 1) - Frantisek Vincens Kramar (Krommer) - arr. André Reichling.

The core element of this composition consists of four notes: Bb, B, F, and D. These recur throughout the work—whether as a sequence (transposed or in their original form), as a harmonic development, or as an inversion. These notes form the basis of both a major and a diminished chord. Individually, they may seem insignificant, but together they create a tension that permeates the entire piece. The composition’s structure is compelling, ranging from soloistic passages and moments of deep emotion or pensiveness (*Impensierito*) to sections of sheer power, all organized much like a suite. This new compositional style offers the composer a different way to express his emotions through music—a form of continuation. The work is dedicated to Marco Pütz, Kleren’s teacher of instrumentation and orchestration, as a token of gratitude.

CONTINUATION - Tim Kleren.

The composer František Zita, a native of Bohemia (in the Czech Republic), lived from 1880 to 1946. He was best known for composing marches. The march *Fanfarový Pochod* (Fanfare March) achieved the greatest prominence in the Czech Republic and neighboring countries.
