Caucasian Sketches Suite No.1 has four parts. The best known and most famous part of the Caucasian Sketches is part 4 from the 1st Suite entitled ’Procession of the Sardar’. Sardar is the Persian title for a military commander.

PROCESSION OF THE SARDAR - Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov / arr. Jo Vliex.

Beatrice and Benedict is a comic opera in two acts by Hector Berlioz with a libretto by the composer, based on William Shakespear’s comedy ’Much Ado About Nothing’. It was his last important work. The music is often magical and light as a feather. Many themes from the opera can be heard in the overture to this opera.

BEATRICE AND BENEDICT: OVERTURE - Hector Berlioz / arr. Jo Vliex.

Skilton originally composed ’Two Indian Dances’ for string quartet in 1916. He later adapted these dances for orchestra. ’The Deer Dance’ (part 1) was dedicated to the ’Rogue River Indians’ of Oregon who were virtually exterminated. Part 2, the ’War Dance’, requires no special explanation as the language of war is evident in the continuous rhythm of the Indian Drum. The melody of this part is original music of the Cheyenne Indians.

TWO INDIAN DANCES - Charles Sanford Skilton / arr. Jo Vliex.

In the spring of 1832, at the age of 18, Wagner composed the Overture to ’König Enzio’, written for Ernst Raupach’s drama ’König Enzio’. This overture by Wagner still has many associations with Beethoven's overture Fidelio. As a young composer, Wagner had not yet found his own musical idiom.

Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy was born in Hamburg on February 3, 1809 and died in Leipzig on November 4, 1847. At the age of 6 he received piano lessons from his mother and in 1817 composition lessons from Carl Zelter. In 1818 - at the age of nine - he performed in a public chamber concert and before he was thirteen he had several compositions to his name, including the piano quartet opus 1. His father was rich enough to let him conduct a private orchestra. He composed his first symphony at the age of fifteen. Mendelssohn started work on his oratorio ’Elias’ around January 1845. At the same time, however, he was working on a symphony, a piano trio, six organ sonatas and incidental music. As a result, his oratorio was not completed until August 1846. The premiere took place on August 26, 1846 in Birmingham. This chorale is one of the examples of romanticism in this otherwise relatively unknown oratorio.

Luigini mainly wrote ballet music, two operas and suites for orchestra. In 1896 he composed the 5-part ’Ballet Russe’. The Marche Russe is the fifth and final part of this ballet.

MARCHE RUSSE from ’BALLET RUSSE’ - Alexandre Luigini / arr. Jo Vliex.

In the years 1914 and 1915, Glazunov composed his ’Paraphrase on the Hymns of the Allies’ with opus number 96. In this Paraphrase he used the following Allied (folk) songs: Russia: God Save the Tsar; Serbia: Boze Pravde; Montenegro: Ubavoj nam Crnoj Gori; France: La Marseillaise; England: Rule Britannia; Belgium: La Brabançonne Japan: Kimigayo.

In addition to 9 symphonies Bruckner also wrote many works for choir. In 1848 he composed the chorale ’In Jener Letzten Nächte’ and in 1879 the gradual ’Os Justi’.
