گروه کمل داستانی دراز دارد ،این گروه ایرلندی الاصل كه آن را در زمره (راك  پیشرو)  و حتی  بهترین این دسته قرار می دهند ،با سه نوازنده بلوز به نام های اندرو لاتیمر (خواننده و گیتاریست) داگ فرگوسن(گیتار باس) و اندی وارد(درامر) به همراه چهره شناخته شده بلوز انگلستان پیتر باردنز در 1972 شكل گرفت. هیچ یك از اعضاء به یاد ندارند چه زمان و به چه علت چنین نامی را برای گروه خود برگزیدند.آنها نوایی را كه گروه Caravan در روزهای اوج خود داشت را با اولین آلبوم خود با نام Camel گسترش دادند: آلبومی دلنشین ،شكل یافته از قطعات گوناگون با رنگ و بویی جز گونه در سطح بالای خود. گروه با ارائه آلبوم های بعدی خود با نامهای (سراب)1974 و (غاز برفی) 1975 گام به مسیری پیشرفته گذارد.
