Say the name ‘Chuckie’ to many and you’ll conjure up images of post-trance Dutch ravers militantly bouncing to reverb-soaked laser synths in a neon warehouse somewhere. And while there can be no doubt that Clyde Narain and his imprint Dirty Dutch have become synonymous with those big banger vibes over the last decade, a bit of detective work through his record box shows a producer/DJ with much more in his arsenal than tectonic electro-house.

“A hardcore Chuckie fan knows I'm always up for a surprise!” he told Mixmag. “But funnily enough people don't think it's weird when I produce a trap or hip hop track but can't see the link when I produce something more underground. I try to never aim for a specific genre. I just make music and sometimes it's something completely different than what people expect from me.“

And that could certainly be said of his latest track ‘Abu Dhabi Joint’, which is due out on Loco Dice and Martin Buttrich’s Desolat label later this year. Strictly deep, muted techno, this arpeggiated mid-set lurker is a far cry from what has come to define the producer, and follows his recent remix of Deadmau5's ‘Ghosts ‘N’ Stuff’ and the bouncy ‘Traphall EP‘ (with the aptly named Childsplay) in flaunting his creative diversity.

“You know, I wasn't even supposed to put out this record,” said Chuckie. “But I sent it to my friends Loco Dice and Nic Fanciulli and told them that ‘Abu Dhabi Joint’ was the outcome of this fun night we all had at Pacha Ibiza. I got a call from Loco right after he heard it and he told me about Desolat’s annual sampler and that the track would totally fit on that!”

But for fans of Dirty Dutch his upcoming release on Desolat doesn’t represent a shift in focus or an abrupt dip into underground techno. Chuckie remains committed to developing young artists on his label, throwing monster parties, and continuing to surprise you with curveball releases and massive cross-genre mashups.

Premiere: Chuckie 'Abu Dhabi Joint'

Opening with label boss Omid 16B & Roland Klinkenberg's remix of Marc Prause's 'Casablanca' creating a brooding, shadowy soundscape with judicious use of evocative reverbs and striking percussive elements, Prause then joins forces with Kazim Aprendiz for ‘Waterfall’, keeping the production sharp and clear, with the pair exploring more leftfield aural territory. Prause's original take on 'Casablanca' rounds out the release, with a thoughtful, introspective tone, and blending a synth motif with subtle chants into broad musical strokes.

VV Cephei, also known as HD 208816, is an eclipsing binary star system located in the constellation Cepheus, approximately 5,000 light years from Earth. A red supergiant fills the system's Roche lobe when closest to its companion blue star, the latter appearing to be on the main sequence. Matter flows from the red supergiant onto the blue companion for at least part of the orbit and the hot star is obscured by a large disk of material. The red supergiant primary, known as VV Cephei A, is currently recognised as one of the largest stars in the galaxy, with an estimated solar radius of 1,050.

German duo Piemont has proven itself to be an absolute production power- house over the last half decade. Made up of long-time friends Frederic and Chris, the pair first decided to hook up and make music together back in 2007 and, since then, have gone on to establish themselves as one of the foremost partnerships in techno and have been releasing Music on acclaimed labels like Area Remote, Exploited, Kraftek, Terminal M, and Toolroom.

The pair actually grew up in ‘90s Hamburg listening to singer songwriters and various rock bands. Always soaking up the use of real instruments and proper arrangements throughout their youths, that genuine musicianship is some- thing that now shines through in Piemont’s own contemporary electronic pro- ductions. In terms of dance music it was French filter house acts and stadium sized ravers like Daft Punk and Chemical Brothers respectively than first tur- ned them on to the possibilities of house and techno, whilst the more subtle intricacies of top labels like Playhouse and Kompakt also continue to inspire and influence this pair.

In 2013, then, Piemont’s sound is best describe as organic techno. Their mu- sic always comes stuffed with a sly robo-funk and is built in many rich layers. Their preference for ambient sounds, melodic lushness and abstract electro- nica makes every track different from the next - for evidence just listen to their recent High Top EP for Glasgow Underground, or earlier classics like Carbo- nat and Back Smoker. Each release tells its own story and often Piemont mu- sic is as suited to home listening as it is club dancing. The best proof of this has come in the form of their two excellent and fully formed long players Strange World Beyond and Sand Hills.

As DJs, too, they have travelled far and wide. On top of playing regularly across Europe at places like Berlin‘s Watergate, Hive Club in Zurich and Stu- dio 80 in Amsterdam, this pair has headlined many festivals and has also played across Russia and Japan, always joining the dots between house and techno styles, going deep or raising their heads into more peak-time territory. As such, they are a very real voice in the global techno conversation; have plenty more to say and keep many people listening intently.

Behind this moniker hides two well known producers, Frank Beckers from D-nox & Beckers and Sandrino Tittel from Lemonpopsicle and White Rabbit fame. Coming together in the studio was no coincidence as the guys have known each other since years in the Ruhrpott area in the heard of industrial Germany.

We Are All Dust is surely their finest moment so far - starting deep and teasing this is one of those tunes which gives you shivers even if you spent the last 30 years on the North Pole or some far located desert. Big smiles on the floor are granted as the emotional theme drops and the track builds and builds.

For remixers our good friends Marcus Worgull from Innervisions and Raxon from Audiotonic delivers their own vision of We Are All Dust.

Marcus re-edits the original parts into a even more teasing version, keeping much of the original flow but dropping midway to a great break where hands are surely to go up.

Dubais brightest, Mr Raxon from Audiotonic and 360 fame takes another route, dropping a massive baseline and dubbing out the parts to one his trademark floor burners.a

To end the EP in fine mode, Frankey & Sandrino offer you Echoes, a perfect slice of piano driven, percussive dub house disco which perfectly shows the craftsmanship these gentleman offer.
