For the second time in two years — and at the beginning her fourth decade of making music — Joanne Rand has released some of the finest recordings of her career. Rand’s 16th independent recording, Roses in the Snow and Drought (Release date: April 4th, 2017) is about continuing to flower against all odds. It is magic spun from thin air, still found in a world that may sometimes seem parched…”I want to be free, sing & shout, growing roses in the snow and drought.” With 30+ years of touring under her belt, Rand understands the importance of standing one’s ground ... for home, family, wild nature, and life in all its riches … all the while celebrating her muse which continues to shine as brightly as ever.

With “elegance and fierceness in the same deep breath” (Gary Snyder Pulitzer Prize winning Poet), Rand touches on topical subjects such as childhood dreams, war and peace, loyalty and betrayal, the inevitability of life passages … even a humorous anthem to her California Humboldt county home. Joined by longtime collaborators, Tim Randles (piano), Rob Diggins (violin), Piet Dalmolen (electric guitar, bass), and Jonathan Kipp (drums), Rand (vocals, guitar, bass, clarinet) continues to push sonic borders with her pioneering vocals and fusion of folk, rock, jazz, Celtic, and psychedelic influences. Seasoned producer Stephen Hart (Santana, David Bowie, Bonnie Raitt) enhances the interplay and organic chemistry between musicians with his exceptional mix. Recording and production assistance are by Piet Dalmolen (Universal Balance Studios, Arcata, CA).
The title song, “Roses in the Snow & Drought," is a tribute to the dreams of a child, growing through the years. “Little People’s War,” written in response to the 2015 terrorist attack in Paris, underscores the question: Is it human nature that leads us into countless wars? How can we adequately respond to such crises? “Circle At The Heart” slowly builds in free-form momentum, exploring the universality of family, amid war and peace. “When You’re Gone” wrestles with mortality while pressing forward to take a big breath of life. The soothing currents of “Where The Water Flows” pays tribute to loyalty through the ages, while the playful, smooth jazz ditty, “Bees In His Walls,” and traditional Scottish tune “The Parting Glass” honor a dearly departed patriarch.

As Rand continues to delve deeper into the fourth decade of her musical journey, the songs sown on Roses in the Snow & Drought, nourish a bountiful garden that will continue to bloom and inspire for decades to come!

Roses in the Snow and Drought, Joanne Rand

I called this album Stories from the Inside Out (Nashville Sessions) because I am a storyteller. I tell stories in the first person, crawling inside the skin of each song and turning it inside out for the listener to get the visceral, the real.. I try to translate personal truths, which are often universal.  
 
I recorded most of these songs in Nashville, where I studied guitar and songwriting with the legendary bard Steve Young. A pioneer of “outlaw” country music and the Americana movement, Young wrote Seven Bridges Road, which it seems like everyone, not just the Eagles, has covered, and Lonesome Ornery and Mean, one of Waylon Jennings’ best songs. What I love about Steve’s style is the authenticity of his voice: long, open-throated vocals sweeping over galloping guitar licks. There is an intensity of truth there. He sings and writes because he is compelled to do so. I feel the same way.
 
With a hand-picked team of professional musicians and technicians, I produced and arranged these songs over the course of a year. The mix was produced by master engineer-producer Stephen Hart (Stevie Ray Vaughn, Neville Brothers, David Bowie, White Stripes). Hart is Chief Engineer at the legendary Bay Area recording studio The Site, and he serves as a National Trustee of San Francisco chapter of the Recording Academy, which produces the Grammy Awards. [Instrumentation includes: vocals, guitars, bass, violin, viola, cello, flute, synth, harmonium, kalimba, and some light percussion
 
What makes this CD special is the relaxed authenticity of the vocals (it’s taken me a lifetime to BEGIN to loosen up), the guitar work and the truth in these stories. I have tried to remain faithful to the roots of this work: a woman, a guitar, a story.
 
TORCH OF FREEDOM
I used to be a painter and this song is a series of four images, which came to me while driving in a midnight thunderstorm. They describe war and peace and a response to our world at hand. The first image is a true story:
 
"There’s a woman in the ice on the road at night
All dressed in black and her feet are bare
And her big brown eyes reflect the candle
She is holding so high,
Her torch of freedom’s fight."

COWGIRL (describes an artist’s temperament)
“I am just a gypsy woman; my heart is bound with the wind.
I am a cowgirl…out on the plain…runnin’ hard again.
I am just a troubadour; I am a wanderer by trade.
A honeybee inside of me…is bound to pollinate.”

RATTLESNAKE / A CHANGE GONNA COME / THE COMING OF THE ROADS
A Southerner born and bred, these songs speak to my origins…of an era gone by, but applicable to the times at hand. Sitting around his kitchen table late one night, Steve Young taught me “Change Gonna Come.”

WHALE
This song tells the true story of a mother and baby whale who swam up the Klamath River, in Northern California,  in 2011 and circled for weeks beneath the storied Klamath River bridge while every day hundreds of people would gather to gaze in awe from above.

BIRDIE FLY
Is a love song to the MUSE and to wanderlust… describing the pull between the stuff of dreams and worldly ties.

UNDERNEATH THE MAPLE
Describes shelter in the storm, safety among family, having to venture out for food, the perils that are hovering, safety from the storms that are hovering around us in this human condition. It is also literal. It celebrates nature and the rejuvenating power of the rain and the love of family.
 
LONG MAY YOU LAUGH
A hospice nurse circulated a list of the five most common regrets of the dying. This song turns the list of regrets into affirmations on how to lead a life with no regrets.
 
BRYAN’S SONG
Written after the overwhelming memorial celebration for a young man named Bryan Osper, who lead a life well lived. The song is based on a ukulele riff he wrote.
 
NATION OF EARTH
Anthem to a larger sense of patriotism…transcending national borders.
 
FLYING RATTLESNAKE
Speaks to the occupy movement of 2011-12…remember???

Changes (personal, political and world change) are the inspiration for these songs and my attempt to help our world slow down, find its balance, and "reclaim its humanity." Wanna Come Home (pop folk)
I woke up from a spotlight dream early in the pandemic, jumped out of bed and wrote this song. It just spilled out all at once.
Up All Night (classical, folk)
I wrote this song this year when my Dad, he's 99, had to spend the night all alone in the hospital and I was unable to get to him. I stayed up all night with a candle and wrote this song.
Take Me Back (country folk)
This song came out of frustration with the way this country is being torn apart and a desire to see us unified. Thinking back on the world I grew up in (last century).
DNA Song (classical, alternative)
I wrote the lyrics to this song during three separate long hikes into the same ancient redwood grove, literally writing as I was hiking back out during the setting sun. Each time I returned, I'd write more verses. The melody was "given" to me by the trees themselves.
Yellow Roses (Spanish style)
This song was written several years ago for my sister. Never published or performed, it's has stuck with me through the years, and I included it here at the urging of my daughter. It's her all time favorite.
Homefire (spiritual folk love song)
This song was cowritten with my first husband in 1986, and has served as a spiritual hearth for me all of my adult life. "Keeping the homefire burning." Homefire is the name of my label.
Yo Heave Ho (Sea shanty)
A song about the cycle of life and the desire to last forever! I wrote it while hiking by the sea. When sang it to my mom (she's 97) at her kitchen table, she cheered every time I got to the chorus.
Slow (Meditative)
I wrote this song in 1982 when I quit my traditional "career path" and moved to a remote farm in SW Colorado to be a singer-songwriter. I'd wake at dawn and watch the red-gold sun rise over the mesa. This song surfaced again for me during the long covid quarantine, as life slowed down immensely. I find that I like the slower, simpler pace.

The genesis for this song is a midnight conversation with my teenaged daughter about what makes us feel most alive and in-the-moment/ in-the-eye-of-the-needle. She said for her it is jumping into the cold ocean.... it was after watching The Great Gatsby. (It ends with that line, "So we beat on, boats against the current, born back ceaselessly into the past.") This is a cheer, an anthem to help us find that moment, the eye of the needle, and ride it.

Touring nationally for thirty years, Joanne Rand "continues to push the art pedal to the floor," NOW mixing her 15th CD of original songs, "Southern Girl."             Writing and playing music since childhood in the Deep South, Rand cut her performance teeth playing bluegrass in Alaska and spun musical magic with natives in the Amazon. She spent six formative years touring from her remote homestead in the Pacific Northwest wilderness, fully launching her career in California’s North Bay Area, where she remains revered as one of the region’s finest independent artists. A North Bay Bohemian readers’ poll voted her “Best Acoustic Band,” and calls Rand a “legendary…longtime local hero.”  In the 1990s Rand helped anchor Seattle's thriving music scene, collaborating with her songwriter brother, during his last years of life.
