I've decided to share some random one off songs that I captured and saved on my phone, never to be heard from again lol.  I have so many song ideas on the go but I don't actually come across a ton that I connect with that I want to keep and record myself.  

Keep in mind this is a very rough demo and I am improvising the lyrics so some of it might be gibberish.  It's also outside, I love the bird sounds!  I don't remember making this song up, it's kind of spiritual and reflecting on the meaning of life.  Often times the meaning of the song comes after I listen back to what I actually wrote, sometimes years later!  Songs keep evolving and gain new meaning throughout their lifetime which is why I keep everything, you never know when something might stick!

Wanted to start sharing some samples of things I've played around with and recorded on my own hence the quality, showcasing my range, I love writing to drum tracks and trying my hand at building beats and experimenting with different genres!  Would love to know what you think!

Time Loop Withdrawal

Song stem/demo of an idea I had early morning this week.  I wanted to share a bit of my writing process, I had awoken at 3 am and felt inspired to stay up for a few hours and paint barnacles, write a bit and play some music.  I usually start out just playing chords until something sounds like a good combination then I just start singing along and let lyrics and melody's flow and play around and keep going until something catches, a line, a hook, sometimes entire verses and then it just builds from there.  

I record myself on garage band to capture all my ideas, this is a 1st draft that I played on the fly making it all up on the spot (hence all the pauses/sound quality etc. this is, as I said, a very early draft) as I went along.  

Sometimes I do nothing more with a song, save it and forget about it, other times they become part of my regular repertoire or something I want to eventually record in the studio.  Either way I enjoy the process, it feels like a honour and a gift to be a creative channel for the Universe.

Christmas with You

This song has always been one of my favourites.  It's funny to hear this version now, recorded back in 2014.  My favourite part starts around 2:43 on this version, I layered some guitar and vocals for a really cool effect and was impressed with my then self!  

I'm not sure when I wrote this song, it could be 2014 or earlier.  I played it for Canadian superstar artist Sarah Slean www.sarahslean.com who was a mentor in my singer/songwriter Banff Centre Residency Program in 2014 www.banffcentre.ca and she offered some constructive advice on the song, so the way I play it now is slightly different, I will post a newer version at some point so you can compare.  

The lyrics at the end of the song repeated are "aren't you tired of running around with your heart cut off".  I'm always amazed at how we as a human race have become so cut off from our true selves, from our joy, from love, from the infiniteness that we are.  It astounds me how we limit ourselves so forcefully, I think of all the amazing things that might have been accomplished this entire time if we allowed ourselves to truly be free to choose our own path, not be forced to assimilate into one system after another.  

As we continue to awaken as a collective it is so important right now during this time of isolation to look within and hear our own truth, to sit with our fears, and smother those fears with love, forgiveness, gratitude and compassion.  We've been ignoring the yearning of our hearts and the Universe is forcing us all to sit still and listen.

I'm digging through my library of songs I've written over the past decade and beyond, mostly recorded on my computer at home with limited knowledge and skill so apologies for poor sound quality, I hope if you listen they will bring you some peace.  Sharing them is the only thing keeping me kind of sane right now!  Thanks for listening!

Someday You Might #onesongaday

This recording is from around 2008 or 2009, I was living in Vancouver and loved Tegan and Sarah and was definitely trying to emulate their sound.  This recording also predates my use of headphones or a condenser mic and there is a lot of ambient noise so I cut the song short to save you piercing an ear drum, you are welcome.  
I was in a relationship at the time that was ending or had ended, it was my first real grown up love relationship living with someone, it seems like many lifetimes ago and like all first great loves it holds a special place in my heart.  
All these memories are resurfacing right now as we face these intense energies we find ourselves in and with them feelings about who I am as a person and realizing I still have no idea who that is, maybe somewhere in these songs there is a glimpse of this woman that I envision becoming, someone good who brings love and joy to those around her.

In the Meantime #onesongaday

This is a song about depression, something I've had most of my life and something that has definitely come back full force that last month with everything going on.  It's reminded me that taking care of myself must be my #1 priority, otherwise I'm of no use to anyone else around me.

As I sit and contemplate who I am and how I can show up in these crazy intense times, I'm comforted by the knowledge that on a soul level all the pain and discomfort I've experienced in this life was necessary to realize and understand that something needed to change.  

Life has been preparing those of us who have been on a spiritual/awakening path for a while now for this moment to shine our light in the storm.  We are seeing massive amounts of people awaken to the realization that we came here to do more than what we have been doing, that we have come to bring to life our soul's desires, to live in alignment with love and to learn that we are infinite, Divine beings who are having a human experience and that we all posses the ability to heal ourselves and create a world free from pain and suffering.

Feeling Like Hell

Jodi Doidge is a creative enterprise, a vocal songbird and a musical maven.  Her voice sounds like Dolly Parton and Leslie Feist created a love child. Jodi sings her own lyrics and music in a distinctly unique alt/pop/country style.
