Muslim school was challenging for me. Although Islamic history came easy to me. The arabic words felt impossible to pronounce.  My mother would tell me arabic was challenging to African Americans because we developed a lazy tongue. Speaking in broken english for generations, never allowed us to fully experience the full range of our speech. 

When my Qu'ran teacher assigned me Surah Al-Ala to memorize, I was nervous. We would have to recite it in front of the entire class. This was the longest Surah I had ever attempted to recite. How could I tackle such a feat. Every night under our mother's prized crystal chandelier, my older sister and I would sit at the kitchen table. Each night she'd sit with me and help me practice one Ayat at a time. 

When the assignment was due I wasn't just ready, I was excited. I stood in front of the class and remembered my older sisters encouraging smile. The class faded away and the ayats rolled out of my mouth, rendering the classroom speechless. 

Since that day I recite Surah Al- Ala once a day. Praying my sister is reward each time. 

My tugweed could use some work. Inshallah I will relearn how to recite it properly.
