Johnny’s on the Water was learned from the singing of Appalachian folk singer Jean Ritchie (1922 - 2015). It twists the archetypal story of a woman left behind by a sailor, the singer rejecting grief and finding empowerment: ‘if he can live without me, I can live without him’. This line became the heart of our arrangement. 

We created this arrangement in residence at Snape Maltings in 2022. In slowing down the tempo, destabilising the rhythm, and replacing Ritchie’s sparse dulcimer accompaniment with an ensemble of modular synths, guitars and affected strings, we explore the way that the open sea warps our understanding of time and distance. The trumpet solo was played by Lissie Daly, a tireless campaigner for women in brass.

A childhood obsession with astronomy collides with devastating moment the 2008 moment that NASA's Ultra Deep Field image revealed graphically how terrifying big the universe is.  It really is easier not to think about it.

This tune is about my wife's best friend/soul mate, Makenna who passed away 10 years ago, before my wife and I had met. I did my best to honor their relationship while delicately inserting my own fear of death. The voice you hear during the bridge is actually an audio clip of Makenna when she and my wife were at a Tarot card reading. Makenna asked the reader “was there anything else that connected us”, curious to know if there was something mystical, or otherworldly that could explain their connection. The reader responded, their bond transcended this lifetime and in each of their many lifetimes together, one would be the caretaker for the other as they endured something tragic.

I wrote this song in 2002 about how sometimes we become haunted by the memory of a first love or someone special we have lost in our lives. Sharri sang this song beautifully way back in 2002. I had the pleasure of recording her singing some of my songs and she did an outstanding job on all of them. I wish I would have been a better musician with better equipment back then but I will be producing several more videos of her singing my songs in the future. I have like 8 or 9. The video is very spooky but artsy as well. I hope everyone remembers their first love. Is anyone still haunted by that love? If you are, come join me, down memory Lane!😱
