Africa was inundated with the ominous clinking of steel chains...the sound of enslavement. Here I play a clave rhythm on a flat piece of steel I found. This was a totally new sound, as steel was rare in ancient Africa and had only been used for utilitarian purposes, never as an instrument...they had whole rainforests of the best wood for that.  Steel becomes the identifying devide line, sound of the new world where these slaves were brought, as the sound of those chains capturing thier ancestors wrought it's way back up thru the collective psyches of those early disenfranchised souls, pouring itself out in rhythms played on anthing they could find laying around the barnyard...like steel tools.  Steel represents the new world, industrialization, enslavement, and the happy joy of a wooden marima as heard in the prior recording becomes old world.

Enslaved In Chains

I imagine the happy joy in an Africa before stealing of the people began by playing this Kuku rhythm in 6/8 accompanied by a nice, melodious wooden tone marimba

Free In Africa

Here I play the talking drum you see pictured, over a Palo rhythm played on djembe, in attempt to re-create the sound of a hunter chasing prey on the plains of the Saranghetti.

The Trance

The Quilombos were settlements of escaped slaves hidden deep in the jungles of Brasil and neighboring countries to the North.

15 Lost Lakota Trail

I teach, play and make drums and guitars. In my 20 plus year career as drum tech in the New York City Stagehand Union I have worked onstage with scores of world famous artists like Dave Matthews, Guns n Roses, Pat Metheny Group. I design and make custom snare drums from vintage shells, make all types of percussion, do cymbal hammering and buffing, drum restoration and refinishing. I gig regularly mostly in NYC, and have played with members of John Mayer's band, members of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, appeared as guest soloist on Timbales for the New Jersey Nets, and recorded soundtracks for indie film.
