This week, we welcome a long-time staple of the Bay Area music scene, friend of the Cowboys (and just about everyone!) and founder of Ambient Mafia, @redstickman. Tho often known for the Ambient Mafia's downtempo chill beats, this set is anything but! Strap on your seat belts and turn off your seat warmers cuz this is coming in hot.

About redstickman:
Redstickman founded the infamous Ambient Mafia in November of 1999, and they’ve taken over chill rooms in the San Francisco Bay Area by storm with their chunky and funky downtempo beats.

Known for his unconventionality as well as excellence in DJ ability, he can be found behind the decks in random clubs from San Francisco to Tokyo, Bangkok to Luang Prabang, and Berlin to Lisbon.

In addition to downtempo, he DJs techno and ghettotech and makes really weird art pieces.

Halloween 2023 At The gRAVEyard

This was year number 12 for Opulent Temple.  Through the years of helping organize OT, it's still a major motivator to have that defining playa music moment.  This year it was Wednesday night at our annual Sacred Dance party.  Of course I wanted to play to the moment, of music that I was passionate about while being conscious to set up Rob Garza from Thievery properly, who was on after me.  That endeavor ended up with this set, which I think is a stand out of my BM sets for it's range of music and emotion.  Never wanting to be pigeonholed and mostly having a disregard for if a tune was old or new, I ended up with a couple classic Alex Metric tunes, some Elite Force revamps that had 'playa tune' written all over them, some unreleased tracks from Lot 49 and Lee Coombs, some bassline techno and moving into the nudisco ala' Croatia Squad, etc I've been playing the shit out of lately cause it's music I love right now seemed a good note to leave it off for Rob Garza.

Hope you enjoy and it takes you back to some playa magic with a packed and beautiful crowd, jellyfish floating through the masses, an aerialist performing high on a forklift, dancers on the stage, and all the unique sights and feelings of OT in top form in the desert.

Live @ Opulent Temple, Wednesday night, Burning Man 2014

What can I say... Breakfast of Champions still remains my favorite party of the year!  Great to see everyone out at the new venue on the start of a new year.  I played on the RIDE stage inside Midway this year and was a rush to have such a huge dancefloor during my set... thank you for your support!

I'd like to give my gratitude to the volunteers who greeted attendees and collected cash and canned goods all day.  A *massive* shout out to everyone who generously donated to our food drive!  This year, we collected $10,075 in person and online and the Space Cowboys matched that, for a total of $20,149 donated to the SF-Marin Food Bank... thanks for helping provide a meal of champions to those in need!

I was supposed to play the Mystikal Misfits' 90's high school party (aka "Our Parents Are Out Of Town") at Burning Man this year, but I got sidelined by an injured paw. But here is the set-that-might-have-been!

One of my favorite things about soundtracks from 90's teen movies is how they were multi-genre smorgasboards of everything the label/studio was pimping at the time. They'd veer wildly from hip hop to alternative to stadium rock to Brit-pop to whatever the fuck Chumbawumba was. There was something fun and shameless and wonderful about the best of them, and that's what I'm trying to recapture here.

The songs clearly belong to the same category of music, of which sub-genre of house I don't know the name of (please chime in). Based on the artists & labels, I would call it that Dirtybird/Green Velvet sound - bass centric, deep & techy, male vocals, minimal breakdowns, etc.

Mixed live with minimal edits, in key(ish) and without the sync feature on a Pioneer XDJ-RX and Yamaha HS5 monitors.  124-125 BPM.
