Taking us on a journey that weaves us in two directions around the circle of fifths, Joel Laviolette's latest piece, Splitting Circles, is a captivating experiment.

Inspired by an interview where Jacob Collier talked about stacking fifths in a single chord creating an ever-expanding "happy" chord, Joel took this concept and ran with it.  He started with a root and fifth dyad and then went up a fifth ("happy") and down a fifth("pensive")  simultaneously.  He then built dyads on those results.  By continuing in this pattern, the music forms a kaleidoscopic spiral that is both moving away from itself and into itself.  The melodies dance around this contrast creating a thread that we can traverse. Sparse percussion interweaves to give us a foundation, and chiming guitars add an organic texture that blends beautifully with the chimes, piano, and marimba, and bells.

Splitting Circles

Joel Laviolette is best known for pushing  the technology boundaries in his live shows with generative video projection mapping, hand-built percussion instruments, an ecstatic dance following-as well as his recently branching in to music preparation work on film and Netflix  (Diving Deep, Seis Manis).

With this latest EP, he takes us back to his Techno music roots.  “Do Not Stand At My Grave and Weep” brings us squarely back to the acid-techno days but with a striking modern feel.  Interweaving spoken word from the 1932 poem of the same name by Mary Elizabeth Frye, this dark piece takes us deep with it’s use of syncopated glitch lines and sequenced FM synths. (117 BPM)

On the second track, “Dudidodo”, Joel sampled his daughter singing and then pitched it and glitched it-interweaving it with the exclusively modular synth creation.  This track checks all the boxes and destined to become a minimal techno modern classic. (128 BPM)

'Did You Win?' is the latest single by multi-instrumentalist Joel Laviolette. Based in Austin, TX, Joel has performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live, SXSW, ACL Festival, Utopiafest, and hundreds of smaller venues throughout the US and abroad.

His eclectic blend is a result of decades of performing traditional Zimbabwean spirit possession music (learned from years of living with his teachers in the hills of Zimbabwe) and a deep understanding of synthesis and modern electronic sounds. He goes so far as to build many of his own instruments and electronics in order to create the sounds he hears in his head.

'Did You Win?' is Joel's 14th release on Ecstatic Wave Records.
