A report on Spreepark, Berlin's abandoned theme park at Plänterwald. Recorded November 2009:
"There’s nothing like the image of an abandoned theme park to trigger emotions of nostalgia and loss. In East Berlin, on the banks of the river Spree, a thick forest hides the rusting ruins of what used to be known as the Disneyland of the DDR. It was called Kulturpark Plaenterwald or Spreepark, and it attracted millions of visitors until its closure through bankruptcy in 2001. The park’s centerpiece is 45-meter high Ferris wheel that pokes out above the treeline, a constant stationary symbol of lost innocence. I visited the park with artist Juan Linares, whose project was to provoke the emotions of the city’s residents by restarting the old riesenrad."
