This song was written right before the first lockdown here in the States, not really knowing what was ahead of us all. It deals with how sometimes all we can do in the face of immense challenges is to just take a breath and try to find peace within.

Simple Answers

"Break Away" is an invitation - to revisit places we love, to get outside and breathe fresh air, to just get out of our own heads for a while. It also speaks to the fact that sometimes we need someone, be it a friend or a loved one to take us by the hand and lead us out of the dark.

Fly Again is a hopeful song about someone who has been through difficult times. While they aren’t quite free from their troubles yet, they know that soon they will break away from what holds them captive. Fly Again seems to resonate in this very difficult moment we are in, with its themes of determination, resilience, and strength.

When I would spend the night at Grandma’s when I was very little, she would tuck me in underneath a quilt she had made and lie beside me telling stories of her childhood in Missouri. Her voice was like a lullaby to me, and I would drift off to dream listening to her. Years later I found myself at her bedside lulling her to sleep. This song is a reflection on what a privilege it is when we can care for those who once cared for us.

I wrote this tune in response to witnessing sensitive areas here in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas (my home) either being developed or experiencing gentrification. It has been frustrating to watch as native plants are ripped out and replaced with non-native trees, shrubs, and plants which of course displaces wildlife, not to even mention the human toll that gentrification can cause. I am releasing this song during the Spring season and especially as Earth Day approaches as a reminder that our actions have direct consequences and we should be mindful of our choices even when it comes to a bit of landscaping.
