Go, lovely Rose

A lovely performance of my Nunc Dimittis by the Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge, conducted by Stephen Layton, recorded live at Brauweiler Abbey on 14 July 2018.

The text is the Latin version of the Song of Simeon from Luke chapter 2. This is the most common English translation:

"Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace according to thy word.
For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,
Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;
To be a light to lighten the Gentiles and to be the glory of thy people Israel."
(Book of Common Prayer, 1662)

Joel Clarkson is a composer and theologian whose work explores musical dimensions of spirituality, nature, and human experience. His writing spans a multitude of genres, from his underscore for film and TV, to his settings of sacred music. He has a PhD in theology from University of St Andrews, and his compositions often engage with the way music opens up experiences of transcendence and acts as a luminous disclosure of divine beauty.
