When planning this set the idea for me was to focus on archival dubs from the early years of Dubstep/pre-Dubstep (2001-2006) that have yet still to see a release. These are many of the same tunes you could’ve likely heard at a FWD night in these years. In keeping with the progressive spirit of FWD though, I didn’t want it to be solely retrospective — so along with the classic archival tunes I mixed in contemporary productions from myself and a few other newer artists — tracing some of the threads linking past, present, and future. bambinodj’s @henryaleksis musical influences trace back to his early childhood in Guinea, West Africa, and are further shaped by his formal training in classical music.
In the early 2010s, bambinodj explored SoundCloud’s underground, tracing black diasporic club sounds from Brooklyn to London. Genres like FDM, Soflojook, UK Funky and Grime shaped his approach to rhythm, energy, and sound design.
After moving to Berlin, he immersed himself in its diverse electronic music scenes, each one adding another layer of inspiration.
Over time, bambinodj gravitated toward the emotional spectrum of music, where melancholy, euphoria, and intimacy intersect.
Blending elements of dancehall, pop, electronica, and trance, he creates a sound that is both personal and globally resonant. What began as remix-driven collage work has evolved into a more refined language, one where vulnerability and rhythm move in sync.

For quite some time now, there has been a noticeable revival of trip hop among the media, record labels, DJs, and producers. This genre, which shaped my musical sensibility in the 1990s, is still close to my heart. That is why the growing wave of nostalgia for those times and its revival in a new, contemporary form served as a pretext for me to filter my favorite trip hop productions through a sound close to the outlines label. In this way, the music of legendary trip hop icons such as Nightmares on Wax, Laika, and Silent Poets has been mixed with tracks by DJ Fulltono, Sun People, Janka, and DJ Rashad. The result is a futuristic throwback to the past.

There are few names as widely loved in clubland as Bristol-based producer Omar McCutcheon, AKA Batu.

His label Timedance, currently celebrating its ten-year anniversary, has been instrumental in shaping a certain corner of contemporary electronic music. It champions a mutant, rhythmic, UK-flavoured sound that escapes any obvious genre touchstones, as well as spotlighting the careers of artists like Verraco, Ploy and Hodge who push musical and cultural boundaries.

In this Exchange, McCutcheon sat down with Resident Advisor's editor, Gabriel Szatan, in London to reflect on the label's Afrofuturist philosophy, its journey over the past decade and the sense of purpose and direction that have developed over time. He spoke about the impact that scenes beyond the UK—such as China, South Africa, Brazil and Mexico—have had on his productions and label curation, and how they offer fresh perspectives that contrast with Europe's sometimes overly nostalgic take on dance music. He also discussed finding positivity in a dark time, and music's enduring potential to inspire and connect.
