Buenos Aires based “digital folklore” trio Tremor return to the forefront of modern South American music with a brand new album on Nickodemus’ Brooklyn based Wonderwheel Recordings. After playing some of the most important festivals and venues worldwide including Roskilde Festival in Denmark and an official WOMEX showcase, the new album entitled Proa continues Tremor’s use of South American folklore traditions and regional instruments to bridge unexpected genres such as Argentine chacarera and Glitch / digital cumbia and electronic. Digging deeper into their folkloric roots and adding a new element of vocals for the first time, Proa is Tremor evolved: the most organic, psychedelic and visceral release of the trio to date, a release where the lines between traditional and digital are blurred into something completely their own.
 
Lead by Leonardo Martinelli (composer and producer), the power trio features Camillo Carabajal (bombo leguero) and Gerardo Farez (synthesizers, melodica and bombo leguero).  Recorded this year in various studios all over Buenos Aires, using a massive variety of traditional South American folkloric percussion and an arsenal of analog synthesizers from different eras, Proa was then digitally processed by Martinelli in a painstaking process. Proa is also special album for Tremor as it marks the first time the band has incorporated the human voice into its work, being Micaela Chauque’s soaring neo-Andean mystic vocals on “Huella,” in almost a pop manner on “Autobuzz,” or deeply deconstructed as in the closing track “Anfibios.”  Proa also prominently features the Sachaguitarra, an exotic stringed instrument created by Argentinean musician Elipido Herrera in 1971 – Herrera created this one especially for Tremor and is the only one of its kind in the world. Pioneering the way for folklore of the future, it’s no surprise that the title Proa literally means “the place where the bow of the boat cuts through the water”.

“I started making these ravey tunes to play out at gigs, but they gathered a momentum and gradually formed this E.P. I came back to it again and again – it seemed to work in clubs but also as a sneaky, immersive headphone listen. I love the feel of an almost overwhelming percussive violence being suddenly flooded with heartache and melody. I find that dynamic exhilarating.

I really wanted this E.P. to capture that. I hope you enjoy listening to it!”

Originally from Tokyo, and now based in London, Anchorsong is a producer and solo live act whose early champions include Huw Stephens (BBC Radio 1) and NYLON Magazine.

Anchorsong – aka Masaaki Yoshida – has become globally recognised for his unique live shows, which many people have described as “like watching a painter drawing on a white canvas”, as he creates electronic music completely live using a sampler (MPC2500) and a keyboard, right in front of the audience. While he mainly performs solo, he frequently augments this setup with a string quartet, for a truly spellbinding show.

Having always been swept away by the atmosphere and excitement of live performance, Anchorsong (who played guitar in a rock band before embarking on this solo journey) brings that vibrant energy, warmth and sense of occasion to the world of electronic music with his compelling live act.

Since his relocation to Europe in late 2007, Anchorsong has supported Bonobo, Prefuse 73, DJ Krush, Daedelus, Gonjasufi, Jaga Jazzist and more, and performed at many prestigious venues including Queen Elizabeth Hall and The Roundhouse in London. He has garnered an international following on YouTube, with videos of his performances having been viewed more than 300,000 times so far.

After wowing the crowds at SXSW 2009, he found himself the subject of a new level of attention, going on to make several appearances on BBC Radio 1, with radio play from Rob Da Bank and a live Maida Vale session for Huw Stephens’ In New Music We Trust show in early 2010.

Having put out three successful EPs in Japan, all of which were released as double packs containing a CD and a live DVD, Anchorsong’s international debut, “The Lost & Found EP” was released on 28th March 2011 on his own label, Case Study.

In May 2011, Anchorsong signed to Tru Thoughts records in the UK, and his highly anticipated debut album, ‘Chapters’, was released in November of the same year. A unique and addictive listen with layer up on layer to explore, the album fuses diverse influences including rock, hip hop and electronica, with every note – from beats right through to strings – played by accomplished multi-instrumentalist Yoshida himself.

Expect big things… and, of course, some seriously exciting live shows.

As if the spine tingling original wasn’t enough to whet your musical appetite, both Paper Tiger and Lopez (in their LPZ guise) weigh in with two very special mixes indeed – the former slowing down the pace and cranking up the bass, and the later delivering a neck snapping contemporary dance floor workout. Not only that, we’ve added two stunning original pieces of music into the bargain that are exclusive to this release. “Close” features the stunning vocals of Colonel Red and is an epic piece of work, whilst “Wood” is a more delicate, pastoral piece where brass meet strings to welcome in the spring. 

“Folded” is your official introduction to the next stage of the Part-Time Heroes story, one which should solidify their status as champions of the UK underground electronic soul scene.

The third single to be taken from the Part-Time Heroes'critically acclaimed album, "Lightfalls", moves away from their recent vocal led output to bring you some serious instrumental electronica. 

"Holy", with its military drums and spooky vocal snippets, received early support from Gilles Peterson on the album's release early this year, and it's his Brownswood label manager, Alex Patchwork, who weighs in with a seriously heavy re-work of this epic cut. His mix should please both dubstep and breakbeat freaks alike, but for something more subtle check out young producer Fybe's remix of album track "Words". Finally, finishing off this stunning package, it's another previously unreleased track featuring neo-soul voice Colonel Red. "Heaven Won't Make Your Wish Come True" is another one for those of a more soulful persuasion, with Redz doing what he does best!

Part-Time Heroes - Holy (Alex Patchwork Remix)

Her third single on Wah Wah 45s, “Robots and Angels”, roundsof what’s been a landmark year from this young lady, with a run of festivals and gigs that ranged from playing to a packed house at The Hootananny in Brixton to supporting new folkers Bellowhead at The Towersey Festival this summer. She’s been described as “simply brilliant” by Gilles Peterson on BBC6Music, who also made it his Album of the Week earlier this year. This final single from the much loved debut album, “Barefoot In Your Kitchen”, is a pseudo-festive delight complete with Bev’s trademark ‘instruments’ including a drill, zippers and the culinary untensil naturally. 

Remixes come courtesy of one of our faourite producers of the moment, Claws For?, who recently worked his magic with Scrimshire’s “Alignment” and here again takes us straight to the dance floor with a sturdy disco/house re-boot. Neapolitan producer, and main man behind the excellent Really Swing imprint, Quiroga delivers a quirky, low slung remix that’s a bit of a favourite here at Wah Wah Towers.

Robots and Angels[Quiroga Remix]


Hip hop / electronica outfit from Leeds, Paper Tiger, unleash their final offering before the release of their debut album this summer, and it comes complete with a very special guest.

Having recently supported Stone’s Throw recording’s NYC-based MC Homeboy Sandman at his sell out London show, both camps hit it off immediately and in no time at all a collaboration between the two was complete! “The Sting” sees the U.S. rapper trade rhymes with Paper Tiger’s very own Raphael Attar, telling the story of a lost and rediscovered first love – a story with a sting in the tail.

“The Sting” has a melodic, “Golden Era” feel, but with Paper Tiger’s trademark production edge, which is even more evident on the very tasty “…And Then I Bounced” remixed, which chops up the vocals and lets the beats do the talking.

Look out for live shows from Paper Tiger in the next few months across the country, and for that debut long-player, due for release on Wah Wah 45s in July.
