Recorded 2009 as an homage to Florian Schneider-Esleben of Kraftwerk, who had recently left the band after a 40 year collaboration with Ralf Hutter.  The track is based around what I call the 'electro choir aura chord' that Kraftwerk exploited extensively and was adopted later in signature tracks by New Order and Depeche Mode.  Ralf, Florian, Karl and Wolfgang were the Beatles of Electro-Techno Pop.

After spending 1984-86 as mostly a studio recording entity (save for the occasional Opium Vala show with Matt Pinfield), Dave and Joe assessed their situation.  With the advent of discounted Moog synthesizers (due to their closing up shop and musicians being smitten with new FM synthesis Yamaha DX-7's) and drum machines, Joe purchased a Moog Source and Casio RZ-1 drum machine and began to explore.  After about a week, he approached Dave with a return to a two piece performing duo.  Dave was intrigued, but stated he would like to play guitar instead of bass.  That was the answer Joe was  looking for, as he would supply the bass on the Moog.  Drum parts were programmed in a way that we were not restricted to a pre-defined course for the song.  The phrases were stopped and started via foot pedal, along with basic program changes for each song to the melody keyboards. 

After rehearsing and playing three shows in early 1988, the duo recorded three new songs, mixed by Don Sterneker at Mix-O-Lydian studios in Boonton, NJ.  The results yielded the 'Hydrogen Jukebox'  five track CD-3, the band's first digital release, in November of that year.  Mastered by Hank Waring at FDS Labs, this is the lead track.  Of note, the studio had a brand new Roland D-50 synth, which made the recording sound very glossy at that point in time.  This track received much airplay on college and alternative radio.  We knew we had hit a nerve when we were asked to play a NJ club's first anniversary weekend.  Nothing else like seeing the crowd sing the lyrics along with you...

Nullset NBNJ - One Dead Soldier

Recorded as part of the "...but then again" CD sessions, this 1989 recording finds the band in a bit of a Who mod mood again.  Of special note: the violin / E-Bow sounds at the end of the track to fade were added by Dave at the last few minutes that night in the studio.  Don- studio owner, engineer and welcome sounding board seemed to think the ending needed a little something extra and Dave agreed.  After a bit of ginger ale fueled thought,  Dave asked Don to punch 12 bars from the end of the song.  What you hear is what we all heard that night in that one take that enabled us to close the track and go out to the Clam Broth House in Hoboken for seafood.

Recorded and released for the WRSU-FM compilation 'Mental Floss', this is the lone original Opium Vala track ever written and performed by this musical revolving door side project of Matt Pinfield (Alternative and Rock radio voice of the 80's, 90's and now.)
