First Choice - Breakaway (Apple Juice Kid And 13th Tribe Intuition Remix)

I got the opportunity to officially remix this classic song to coincide with the release of a new Donny Hathaway box set. I was given the original multitrack master of the studio version (different from the live version)and it consisted of 8 different instrument and vocal tracks (as opposed to the more usual 24 tracks) 
When I take on a remix, my first goal is to make it work on a current dance floor. I like to stay very close to the originally recorded sound and In most case there's plenty to be reworked on the multitrack master to achieve this. 
This case proved a little different as there were few rhythm elements I could use to fit within current standards of club loudness levels. So I decided to take a slightly different approach, and add a new set of (acoustic) drums,  to bend the original Soul vibe a little towards Disco territory.

Originally Produced by Greg Carmichael and written by one of the best writing teams of their time, James Calloway, Sonny T Davenport & the legendary Leroy Burgess. In 1988 Leroy was commissioned by Bobby & Steve’s Zoo Experience Records to do a 6 track mini album, with Barley Breaking Even (BBE) being reproduced and re –vocaled by Leroy and Orange Juice Jones man, Tyrone Williams. With the Disco sound still very much at the forefront of today’s club scene.

Groove Odyssey’s Michael Hughes commissioned Opolopo to bring BBE back to the dance floor and what a job he has done. Keeping many of the original BBE elements, Opolopo has signed, sealed and delivered a dance floor classic for the old and the new generation to embrace.
