Het proces wat je beschrijft over het creëeren is spot on hoe ik het zelf ervaar met mijn mixtak(p)es, alleen is de duur ervan meestal maanden :) Behalve eind augustus toen ik gek genoeg ook het snelst van A naar Z ging. Meestal beschrijf ik mijn proces niet, maar misschien moet ik het ook maar eens gaan doen :)

June was without a doubt one of the best and craziest months of my life. I made so many core memories in such a short timespan, that I feel like I didn't even had time to properly process everything, so I am enjoying some much needed downtime while recording this mix and writing this little description. I have been feeling a little emotionally vulnerable lately, which makes me get back into my natural state of isolating and slowing down. I think July's mix is built on that feeling. When life gets too crazy or tangled, sometimes all you need is to sit down, reflect, and get carried away by the sound of soothing synths. Take it slow for a while, and I hope that in some way this month's mix is also for you. <3 Joey

XI - July 2025

They say there are two certainties in life: death and taxes. Well, that and the fact that there is a new XI episode every 1st of the month at 10 in the morning. Although this month was a way bigger technical struggle than others to get the mix the way I wanted. I am really due for a holiday to reset and re-energize, and forcing creativity under these circumtances just doesn't work for me. I keep striving for some unreasonable perfection, and try to make every episode better than the last one. While wanting to improve yourself in principle is not a bad thing, I need to not lose track of what XI in essence is all about: digging for unknown songs and combining them into an eleven track showcase of everything I have enjoyed the past month, and enjoying the whole process from start to finish. I try to capture recent moods and expectations for the coming month, all the while keeping track of my progression as a DJ. And that not every mix ends up like a flawless diamond should not matter all that much. Sometimes I just need to refocus to get that straight. So here is your monthly certainty: eleven fresh tracks that hopefully deservedly will find their way into your streaming libraries. Now then, nothing left to do but to enjoy Dutch summer to the fullest; pull on a sweater, equip your raincoat and stare out of the window of the train while the drizzle trickles down. The feeling of summer escaping your grasp always dampens my mood. Luckily there is always music as my emotional outlet. The process of creating these mixes every month can take quite some time. Gathering songs I like, creating a tracklist that tells the story I want to tell and that has a nice flow (which usually takes about a million tweaks), and then playing and recording the whole thing. But this month was different. The songs were just there from the start and I had zero doubts or second guesses. Without a doubt the fastest mix I created from A to Z, and maybe not so coincidentally also my one of my favorite XI's so far. I guess that is what happens when we let things flow their natural course and accept that not everything needs our intervention. So instead of mourning the end of summer, let's embrace it and enjoy the last days of warmth and sunshine and the outdoors to the fullest. I really hope you enjoy this one as much as I do. <3 Joey

Joie de Vivre - Episode 560

Autumn is always a time to slow down and reflect. Probably that is why I ended up making this a very introspective and emotional XI episode. October last year turned out to be the catalyst for everything that happened to me in the past 12 months and got me to where I am and who I am as a person today. It is weird listening back to last year's episode, because it transports me right back to the feelings and emotions of that time. It is also comforting to realise that even though I ended up going through one of the roughest patches I have experienced and at the time it all seemed meaningless and hopeless, in the end it all turned out alright. And life is funny like that. I am learning more and more to accept the things that are not in our control and to flow with the waves instead of swimming against them. To embrace the adventure in the uncertainty that lies ahead of us and to accept and love myself (that last one is the hardest). Having so many unique, amazing and loving people in my life that support me all the way, I can't help but feel super privileged. I am so incredibly proud to see all of you tuning in every month and to hear and read your lovely messages; I can't say this enough but it really means everything to me. A few days late, XI November is finally here. I needed some time off and away from home in a different environment to mentally and physically recharge. Ironically I was in a similar state of mind exactly one year ago. It's difficult and uneasy to put yourself out there and to be vulnerable towards others. When you have been hurt one too many times in the past, it's easier to wall yourself and your feelings off for the outside world. But that way you risk missing out on creating true connections. It can also be so relieving to open up and realise you are not the only one with certain fears and thoughts. Certain weights then don't seem as heavy a burden anymore. Getting out of your own head and seeing and hearing other perspectives is often the most important thing to realize self acceptance and growth. And while sticking your neck out means a risk of disaproval or rejection, it just might also be the emotional or creative outlet to get you understanding or affirmation. That is part of why I keep giving you an honest insight in my mind every month. XI November feels a little more on the heavy side, and includes probably my favorite track of 2025. I hope this mix reaches you right when you need it. Stay brave, you're not alone. <3 Joey
