An idea who’s time has clearly come, MOON ROCK VOLUME 1 struck a nerve upon release last spring. A collection of deeply atmospheric ambience, cosmic, and chillout techno, it was the opening salvo in a much longer-term effort by NYC-based THRONE OF BLOOD RECORDINGS to establish a platform for a diverse collection of friends and musical fellow travellers to explore composing music for folding time and exploring innerspace. Now, just months after Vol. 1 hit shelves, MOON ROCK VOLUME 2 is upon us…

An evolutionary step further into the ether, Vol. 2 evokes a familiarly offkilter and contemplative vibe. But it is also more sonically diverse than Vol. 1, presenting a more expansive view of chakra-stimulating spacemusic straddling techno, strange acoustic instrumentation, and Balearic flavors.

In addition to artists that have released on Throne of Blood before, like Bunker New York’s Ulysses, Tel Aviv’s Red Axes, producer/visual artist Pixelife, studio maestro AKA JK, and the inimitable Pittsburgh Track Authority, Moon Rock Vol. 2 features contributions from Tempelhof & Gigi Masin, Jonah Sharp (Reagenz) and DJ Spun (Rong Music) in their Loose Control Band guise, Balearic Gabba Soundsystem feat. peeDoo, Toronto’s Arthur Oskan, Margot (Les Disques de la Mort), Ima Cliché boss Cosmo Vitelli (Bo’tox), and two contributions from Cologne Tape’s Jens-Uwe Beyer/Popnoname.

This is music for comedowns, meditation retreats, and adventures beyond the Ultraworld. Tune in and space out…

B2. Arthur Oskan - Cityspeak

After Channel Two’s well-received debut album Artful Time Reduction in 2007 – an LP that received major foreign press,  airplay on Gilles Peterson’s worldwide BBC radio show, numerous placements on compilations, film & television (Chris Rock’s I Think I Love My Wife / Fox Searchlight Films) and kudos through many international playlists (Quantic / Paris Djs / Philly’s Record Breakin’) – the ‘Two’ are back in ’12 with their latest LP, Beyond 2012 and the remix album. 

A good record needs good remixes.  Friends,  networkers and great producers who reflect the music and come back with their artificial view on the music. We are proud to present  a great  selection of remixes  out  of the Deja-Tunes  and Channel Two environment. Every track is a winner and has a unique style. Starting up with a ‘positive vibe’ Reggae version by The Bas Lexter Ensample,  the remix-collection is being introduced very tasteful. The French producer Alan De Laniere gives us a strong string- work on a modern driven Downbeat remix. Savages from Budapest worked out a nice remix together with Unifairfly, they let us know how Channel Two can turn into a funky Hip Hop blend.  

If it comes  to sweet,  clubby & dubbed out beats Omegaman is Australians first choice. We were happy to be covered with his delighting remix of the track ‘Lovley’. 

Reunited to remix Channel Two – the brilliant duo Fellmann & Louise have found together again to make ‘a Lovley’ remix version in a ‘Studio One’ alike Reggea sound with a modern shape. Deep House, Dance and electrofied remix versions come from DPR MASS, reminding in good old French House music, followed up by Hamburgs Deep House artist riccicomoto,  Berlins Helly Larson and Hamburgs Marc ‘Dirty’ Deal. Further remixers are: Aaron Bingle,  Michael Sauer,  Deja-Move,  Mr. Yoshiaki and 5000 gave us their creative perspectives between Downbeat, Drum and Bass and Electro Pop ambiences.  For all the lovers of good music, and friends of Channel Two this remix selection is a good choice to reduce their time in an artful way.

It’s with great pride (and a certain sense of defiance!) that Tom and I present
you with the 200th Freerange release. Despite the best efforts of three bankrupt
distributors, an arsonist (who set the Sony warehouse ablaze back in 2012) and a
volatile market, we retained the fire in our bellies, a stiff upper lip, and most
importantly an unrelenting passion for electronic music, we soldiered on and here
we are at Freerange 200!

To mark the occasion we wanted to put together a compilation of exclusive new
tracks from both long-standing Freerange regulars as well as some fresh artists
to the label whose music we’ve been loving. Being committed to vinyl we figured
the best way would be to do a two part release with four-tracks on each part.
Kicking things off we have my first original Jimpster track since Porchlight And
Rocking Chairs. Head Spin is a relentlessly chugging house track which puts
equal parts Disco, early House, Afro and Techno through the blender and out comes
a peaktime floor pleaser with a spring in its step and a lovely driving energy.
I’m really proud of this one and hope you love it too!

Next up we have Matt Masters teaming up with Pippo Ceretti on Xenophilia. We’re
like a couple of proud parents seeing how Matt has come on with his productions
and this brilliant slice of freaky, stripped back electronic house shows he’s
heading for big things.

Flip over for a very special track from Andy Hart, one of the Melbourne-based
producers helping to re-invent and reinvigorate the current house scene alongside
the likes of Harvey Sutherland, Fantastic Man and Andras Fox. Not only has Andy
managed to establish one of the most hotly tipped new labels (Voyage Recordings)
in the space of just two release, but he’s also been rocking it with his
productions on labels such as Heist and Sleazy Beats Black Ops and we’re very
happy to welcome him to Freerange with this sun-drenched slice of gorgeousness
called MYLNY.

Closing the first part we have long-standing Freerange regular Shur-i-kan
stepping up with his track Raindance and if your tastes edge towards the jazzier,
fusion end of House then you’ll be all over this one. Classic Shur-i-kan and
sounding lush as ever!

They may only be about to drop their second release but  Organic Analogue  are already a label to be reckoned with. When your first release comes with a Heinrich Mueller remix, your releases come on stunningly-designed heavyweight clear vinyl, your website has a moving starscape, and you release tracks like this one  from Tblisi, Georgia , you basically have our attention. OA002 features four tracks plus a remix by  The Reflektor aka Gifted & Blessed , but this is our pick - a cosmic bubblebath of undulating tones and gliding rhythm that we defy you to resist.

HVL "Cygnus Loop" - Boiler Room Debuts

We've had our eyes & ears on Malmö's Fasaan Recordings since they released Medicine's organ-driven Afro-funk freakout "Enjebeye" back in 2013. The label's eighth offering comes from Bufiman (AKA Jan Schulte) in the form of the Ältere Sachen 12".

The songs on Ältere Sachen were originally made six or seven years ago and picked up on by the Fasaan crew when they played with Schulte in Düsseldorf,  where "Die Mumie" remained spinning round their heads for days after. The track fits perfectly into the Fasaan aesthetic, a pulsating fizzed-out lead accompanied by a dangerous groove to boot, topped off with a hint of deviancy.

These almost lost recordings will get to shine through Fasaan Recordings in mid June.

Vernon Felicity - Persuader EP - SOS7

DJ Koze's 2013 album opus Amygdala has continued to bewitch all who encounter it since its release. Tipped as his own personal Sgt. Pepper, the sublime long-player revealed a fully-realised and personal body of work, complete with a classic songwriting at its core, House in its heart, and veins coursing with psychedelic color. La Duquesa' was the album's dreamy single standout, a journey into deep, tropical ecstasy. XTC' begins in the same spirit, and captures the all the blissful allusions of its name, but its initial gentility belies the deep intensity to come. Floating pads glow with celestial ambience as a kick drum is gradually coaxed into solid form, and the introduction of spoken text begins the second act. Many people are experimenting with the drug Ecstasy,' it says, ...is the drug like the lie and meditation the truth Or am I missing something that could really help me". XTC' then transforms: sweetly imploring tones become demanding, gentle gradients between chords turn hard-edged, and sharp hi-hats cut through the haze. Complete with Koze's signature percussive quirks, it drives towards the track's final pay off: an undeniable, all-consuming, irresistible high. Knee On Belly' recalls Koze at his most tongue-in-cheek and overt, it is bright, bold and literally brassy, using cut-up horns of all shapes and sizes to patchwork together his own unique arrangement. With the highs and mid ranges accounted for, Koze adds in a swollen, thrumming bass line to mix to bring this floor-filler to life. Knee on Belly' recalls a raw, filtered and funky approach to groove, with a nod to disco house and the art of artful sampling, as it orbits between its own neon highs and simmering lows.

Delsin present a new EP by B12 aka Steve Rutter entitled Orbiting Souls, a name which comes from the fact the veteran artist has recently spent contemplating the loss of a friend and believes we are surrounded by lost souls and spirits. 

This is B12's second EP this year following on from the Bokide 325 release on Soma Records and comes years after still acclaimed album like Electro-Soma and TimeTourist on Warp Records back in the 90s. Orbiting Souls is a somewhat complex journey, a representation of inner Bi Polar opposites; isolation; sadness, but also acknowledging the great and wonderful things around that swirl and support and energise us.

We warmly welcome back Kettel who makes his return to Clone/DUB records since his debut Cenny Crush 15 years ago (which was followed by the brilliant Whisper Me Wishes in 2007). After a hiatus of 3 years since his last release Kettel is releasing his new album on Clone Records. The talented musician has been busy with producing music for computer games and commercials, but is now offering a fine selection of pieces he has made in the last couple years with this full length in mind. The result is a playful, inspiring, eclectic, delicate, melodic, well-balanced and brilliantly produced album fuzzing elements of electronica, classical music, jazz and techno stirred into flawless, memorable compositions. As a 90's kid Kettel has always been inspired by the early electronica pioneers (whose names don't even need to be mentioned... everyone knows who we're talking about right?), and on this album too you can hear some of the aesthetics of those late 90's productions, but adopted into Kettel's unique world of confident rhythms and melodies filled with expression. The music on this record has a lyrical quality to it and is so expertly written that it does not strictly depend on it's electronical environment: these compositions would still stand firm performed on whatever combination of instruments. Another lovely and magical release by Kettel thats spreading good vibes from the first to the last second!

Toronto’s My Favorite Robot Records is kicking the New Year off in style with a superb ‘Stimulus
package’ release followed by a stellar single from Pink Skull already on the cards. Now the MFRR crew are teaming up with a fellow Toronto producer for the next EP release due to drop in mid February. Arthur Oskan has been part of the city’s electronic music landscape since the Nineties, forging a place for himself with his evolving signature sound, a hybrid of synth-pop, Detroit techno and industrial rock. Releases on celebrated labels such as Thoughless music, Trapez and Ghostly International have brought him considerable attention whilst bookings at high profile festival in North America and Europe have brought his own out of the studio, direct to the masses.
The ‘Chromantic EP’ is Oskan’s debut release for the My Favorite Robot Records and features three superb slice of electronic music that veer away from genre classification. The release opens with the sublime ‘Omegaman’ a track that features hypnotic top lines, emotive synth melodies and a heavily vocoded vocal that all join up to make for a winning combination. Second track ‘Maximillian’ journeys into deep old school techno territory with argeppiated basslines and rolling drum programming ruling the day. Finally we have the epic ‘Adrift’ that spreads its uplifting and hypnotic electronic flavours over eleven and a half blissfull minutes.

The ‘Chromantic EP’ is an accomplished and engaging EP from a producer of considerable talent who will hopefully be contributing further to My Favorite Robot Records, enjoy.
