‘The Blackpool Grand’ is my favourite theatre. It was designed by the eminent Victorian architect Frank Matcham in 1894. It was dubbed as ‘Matcham’s Masterpiece.’ Under threat of demolition in 1973, ‘The Friends of the Grand’ was formed. They painted the dressing rooms, repaired holes in the ceiling and helped to get the theatre back into shape. Early influential ‘Friends’ included Violet Carson, Alistair Cooke, Ken Dodd, Leslie Crowther, Timothy West Prunella Scales, Billy Pearce and Johnnie Casson.‘The Friends’ are also the founding angel of the ‘National Theatre of Variety.’ Anyone, with a love of theatres, or the arts, can become a ‘Friend of the Grand’ for a yearly subscription fee.

I often like to work my tunes around a famous (or not-so-famous) picture or photograph as a source of inspiration. I came across this fantastic photo by Giuseppe Milo, who is based in Dublin. It shows two little Irish street buskers earning their pocket money in a very inventive way. So, what’s their story? As the little boy plays, does the little girl dance, sing or just sit politely thanking the punters for throwing their coins into the case as they pass by? What tune would the little boy be playing on his accordion - an old tune, a new tune, or an old forgotten tune? I would like to dedicate the piece to all the street buskers who entertain us as we pass by. I hope you enjoy it.

As the Easter season draws near, I’m drawn to this well-loved and inspiring Biblical passage from 3. Ecclesiastes. I’ve added a shortened version to the artwork. Over the years, I’ve been inspired by film music. So many wonderful composers have left a rich and varied legacy of treasured memories in this genre. Sometimes, after watching a film, I feel inspired to weave something into the fabric of the story. I’d been watching and reading Brian Friel’s biopic: ‘Dancing at Lughnasa’ where two scenes stood out. The mourning of the sister’s farewell in the film with their happier ‘dancing days.’ The scenes fit nicely in 3. Ecclesiastes – A Time to Mourn; And a Time to Dance – an experience we all encounter throughout our lives.
