I also love to play the guitar versions, and it doesn't matter whether they are electric or acoustic. When I heard the "Circus" version of "Big White Cloud" it reminded me of his brilliant song writing as the track has so few chords. It inspired me to record this version."

"'Fear' and 'The Academy In Peril' were the first John Cale solo albums I ever heard. 
On each record since he has always delivered something totally unexpected. 
"Dying On The Vine" has always been a very moving song for me even though I am not sure if I understood all the hidden meanings of the lyrics. In French the saying ‘Dying On The Vine’ describes something like the common human fear of not achieving what you think you are capable of, like an act of surrender when you accept that you will never be able to realize those old wishes you had ... and finally the charge of regrets that it evokes.

As he already sang "Fear Is A Man's Best Friend" I felt that it was an interesting clin d’œil.

‎”I borrowed Music For A New Society from a library when I was 19. It astonished me. Then I heard a few guitar-driven tracks such as Evidence and Russian Roulette, which were thrilling – as much for the lyrics and vocals as the music. I’d heard of John Cale as a Welsh guy that was in that druggy, discordant NY band The Velvet Underground, so I couldn’t believe it when I heard Paris 1919, which was… so lush and melodic, with piano and strings, and evocative literary and historical metaphors. I’ve been hooked ever since. What I find intriguing is that he seems to make albums without fear or constraint. Even now, each album is an experiment, trying out new ideas, technology and collaborators. In fact, the best thing about John Cale is that he has never made a perfectly consistent record. Each one has sublime moments, strange moments, and sometimes bits that don’t work – but every single one is intelligent and interesting. His body of work is fascinating; an amazing achievement. He is the grit in the oyster. If I had to pick one favourite John Cale song it might be Antarctica Starts Here, Endless Plain of Fortune, Chinese Envoy or Archimedes. However, I chose to record one of his least celebrated songs, a throwaway album filler from Slow Dazzle called Ski Patrol. I tried to mess it up. I think I succeeded – but only you can judge whether that’s a good thing. Happy birthday, John!”
